You already have a great electric guitar and cables and $1000 to get an amp with these conditions:

    1) Must sound great at low and high volumes
    2) All equipment must be new at normal selling prices
    3) Has to reach volumes loud enough to be heard over a metal drummer
    4) Gig worthy
    5) Has to cover clean to extreme metal and all in between
    6) Has to be portable
    7) Versatile - practice to stage, small club to medium size venue
    8) $1000 USD spend limit - you need both the amp and the cab
    9) You can have an extra $100 for effects

    What do you get?

I would get one of Ceriatone's Marshall clones.

You would have far better luck and many better choices bumping that budget up $500-$1000.00

Right now you are in the worst of consumer grade budget range.

"All equipment must be new at normal selling prices"

At $1000 and all the other requirements you gave.. this is TOUGH.

Someone said EVH III 50W and 2x12 and I agree... but is that < $1000 new?

That's hard to do for $1K.....

    1) Save another $500 and get a Mesa Express 5:50+

    2) Consider buying a recent used Mesa Express 5:50+. They come with a 5-year transferable warranty from Mesa Boogie.

I would probably buy something from Line6. Lots of options under $1K. Not at all my thing usually but for the range of tones and volumes described in the challenge, this is my choice.

Seriously? What you get for 500 more prosumer stuff and 3000+ is verified bad ass level?
What's better than a amazing high end gear you like... Cheap gear you like as much it more.

    But to answer the OP...
Calor should be in that neighborhood...

Does it have to be a head and cab?

Can you spend less? I know the bad cat cougar is a sweet amp for the money and does everything you ask except for being 1000....it's less

I'd go used, especially since you have to ask what to buy. Meaning, you don't know what sound you want. Then you can change the head/cab when you outgrow it and not lose half your investment.

If this is an exercise or hypothetical, I fail. But if you're actually going to buy this, Guitar Center has a clearance price of $1150 on an Engl Thunder Drive 50w 1x12 combo.

If you need real metal tones, best bet is a Carvin V3 and whatever extension cab you can find for around 250 .

Next best would be a Laney Ironheart combo with extenion cab.

That's hard to do. You didn't say you had to have tubes, so maybe a Yamaha THR100 and whatever 4x12 you can find. If you want tubes, you could go with a Jet City JCA100HDM and a Jet City 2x12, those aren't too bad. You could do much better used.

    Bugera 6262 head $549
Bugera 2x12 (these speakers are pretty good) or Blackstar 2x12 (celestion 70/80) or a few other cabs that are better or worse
maybe upgrade a speaker in a cheaper cab
    maybe buy a delay

I was actually going to get the 6262 but I bought a used American 6505+ for a little bit more $
I'm glad I did but the Bugera is still great
ive have a v22 for years and it's pretty much my favorite
    Bugeras hold their own

$1,000 is slightly short - I'd go (actually i DID go) Carvin Legacy 3 + 212. They are blowing the head out for $850 and the cab for $399 right now - huge deal and a great amp. 3 channel, midi, built in reverb, loop, boost , switchable 15/50/100Watt and super portable. Better quality then Bugera etc . The sound is a bit dark so needs a treble boost with humbuckers but kills with my telecaster (with no treble boost)
