The day after the Super Bowl should be a national holiday

I think we need to update our holidays. I mean, Columbus Day? Really?

    Here are my additions:
    • Super Bowl Monday (day after Super Bowl)
    • Opening Day of Baseball Season
Edit: I'll also add the first Thurs and Fri of the NCAA basketball tournament to this.

    My subtractions:
    • Presidents Day
    • Columbus Day

Here's a list of Federal Holidays per the interwebz:
    • Friday, January 1 New Year’s Day
    • Monday, January 18 Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
    • Monday, February 15 * Washington’s Birthday
    • Monday, May 30 Memorial Day
    • Monday, July 4 Independence Day
    • Monday, September 5 Labor Day
    • Monday, October 10 Columbus Day
    • Friday, November 11 Veterans Day
    • Thursday, November 24 Thanksgiving Day
    • Monday, December 26 ** Christmas Day

A more realistic idea, and I think I read somewhere the NFL is considering it but I imagine things sometimes, is to make it Super Bowl Saturday.

BTW, "national holiday" and "federal holiday" aren't the same thing exactly. Columbus Day is a federal holiday, but not a national holiday. Federal holiday refers to days that US Government offices are closed.

A holiday for a game that has about 15 min of actual play and 4 hours of commercials?

The idea of the holiday is for the millions of hangovers, not to honor the game itself.

    That's what I'm talking about.

And the opening day of baseball? Given the speed at which the game elapses, it takes a trained eye to tell the difference between "opening day" and the "day before opening day." Not sure that's holiday-worthy.

I think a better course of action would be to just cancel the super bowl and have everyone do something productive with their Sunday instead.

There is no reason it can't just be moved to Saturday, I cannot for the life of me understand the resistance to this.

Next week we get Monday off due to Patriot's Day. I have no idea what the hell Patriot's Day is, but who cares.... it's a day off!

You live in Massachusetts? It says Long Beach in your location. I've never heard of it being a holiday anywhere else. (A quick look at Google shows they also have it in Wisconsin and Maine.) It's to commemorate the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the start of the Revolutionary War.

The Boston Marathon is always on Patriots' Day.

While it does seem that way, there are in fact 60 full minutes where the game is actually played, minus a few penalty clock run offs. That said, it does not make your point any less valid!

10 years ago i'd be all over this idea - today, well hell i'll take an extra day off. We do work a heck of alot more than the average western european.
