My favorite band of all time, but I hesitated to say so for some reason. Live, there were better acts out there, of course. It's their recorded legacy that I treasure.

Man... I'm listening to the Foo Fighters Colour In the Shape - and for the life of me I can't see why anyone would say these songs are unmemorable... Its the effing definition of memorable. You don't have to like their music - but that's just weird to me.

    My favourite American band:
    Sonic Youth

Most influential: The Byrds, The Doors.

I can see the argument for Creedence, Skynyrd, the Allmans and the Dead defining a particular American sound and style.

I know it's subjective, but for me bands like Tom Petty, Aerosmith and Van Halen are too mainstream and derivative to be anything other than also rans.

If I had to pick the 'greatest' overall, I'd probably say it was the Eagles, for the level of songwriting and musicianship.

It’s gotta be skynyrd. If all they wrote was freebird they’d still be in the running, but they wrote soooo many good songs. Better songwriters than the allmans but not as jammy.

Beach Boys here. The whole catalog. Not just the obvious hits.

Was it Steve Martin who described that song as a song about a guy who thinks he's taken acid?

I'm good with Eagles, Aerosmith, Skynyrd, Doobies, Styx, Kansas, Little Feat, Steve Miller, Heart, Boston, Edgar Winter, awwww heck why in the world would anybody in their right mind still be trying to pin this honor on just one band?

The Eagles man! In the end all music comes down to vocals, and they were hard to top.

Yes. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers +1,000,000. No other artist compares IMHO. Longevity, relevance, image - they’re “it”.

Ok, I lied... Aerosmith is a close 2nd. They weren’t as consistently great as the Heartbreakers though. I loved the earlier material like “Get Your Wings”, “Aerosmith”, “Toys in the Attic” is a fave and of course, “Rocks”.
