Because of the Beastie Boys song Mullet Head.

Although there are many urban legends, and claims that it was widely used as slang for decades prior, there's no written or recorded evidence to suggest otherwise.

I remember the article in Grand Royale magazine that year that explained and explored the mullet. I was a very early adopter of that term.

I was always bummed the the term "shlong" (short/long) didn't catch on. I thought was funnier than mullet.

l think that is already in use to describe another anatomical part. Maybe spelled differently, though.

I remember people making fun of mullets about 15 years ago and I didn't know what it meant. I probably had learn that info on TGP.

When I had one (circa '85), I called it "the bi-level 'do."

Yup, it was a popular cut in my days, and we never called it a mullet, it was known simply as the short-long, party in the rear.

Mullet (and sometimes mullet head) I think used to be used to just describe an ugly guy. Don't have any knowledge of when it started to be used for the hairstyle, the OP's story is as good as any I guess.

More importantly than what it's called, what was whoever that started the hairstyle thinking? :eeks:omg:anon

Before 1994, I thought of it as the "Geddy."

Which is exactly why I thought it should have been the term to use when describing the Billy Ray Cyrus haircut.

There was a show on MTV UK which had a feature called 'The wall of mullets', where people would send pictures of dudes with mullets. I remember an American yearbook from the 80's being a most incredible submission.

It was sometime in the mid-90s, and it's the first time I can recall hearing the term.

I'm suddenly picturing Miley in her faux southern accent in an interview saying... "Back in the day my dad had the best Shlong".

Interesting! That was the first year I heard that word, a guy in the warehouse I worked in said "He's got a mullet - short on top long in the back!" and for some reason that struck me as really funny.

I definitely rocked a mini mullet back in the day,...with a mustache.

First time I heard the term "mullet" was in 1984. Our band director called people with that haircut "mullet heads"
