According to Z. Vex it's a silicone fuzz not a germ...

Si Fuzz Face into a Fulldrive II is what the current thought is. There has been some debate about this in the past...

It sounds to me like Gary used a silicone Fuzz Face on all the old Jayhawks stuff. Word is that Gary found out his Fuzz Face actually has silicon transistors and not germanium like he originally thought. Wouldn't surprise me as it sounds much more like an Si Fuzz Face than a Germ one to me. It can get pretty spitty on other songs from that era. He used it in conjunction with a Fulldrive II a lot. I think that's why it's hard to cop his tones with just a Fuzz Face...it needs to be stacked with the FD2.

I saw them live years ago in Nashville and he had a Dunlop Fuzz Face I think. Red and round.

The FF used during that era was definitely silicon. A couple of years ago I asked Alex Anest of Phoenix Custom Electronics to custom build me a "Louris Fuzz" based around the tones on Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow the Green Grass. I wanted the features of his usual fuzzes (including an outboard bias pot) with BC-109 trannies, then tweaked to taste. He nailed it. I actually like it better with a KOT V4 than I do with a Louris style FD2.

That's good to hear as Gary bought a KOT (normal gain) in January :)

Gary has ditched his Fuzz Face recently for a Super Fuzz. He also have a Wattson clone as a back-up.

+1 In the liner notes of the HTH CD it has a picture of a red Dunlop Fuzz Face, so assume that's what was used during the original recording.

That Fuzz Face is not a Dunlop my friend. It's an original. :)

Just as likely to be a loaner/something lying around the studio - I love that album and Waiting for the Sun is a standout track from it.
