IMO, Aladdin Sane is start-to-finish the best album Bowie recorded. I love every song off that album.

"The Jean Genie"

A small Jean Genie
snuck off to the city
Strung out on lasers
and slash back blazers
Ate all your razors
while pulling the waiters
Talking bout Monroe
and walking on Snow White
New York's a go-go
and everything tastes right
Poor little Greenie

[CHORUS]
The Jean Genie lives on his back
The Jean Genie loves chimney stacks
He's outrageous, he screams and he bawls
Jean Genie let yourself go!

Sits like a man
but he smiles like a reptile
She loves him, she loves him but
just for a short while
She'll scratch in the sand,
won't let go his hand
He says he's a beautician
and sells you nutrition
And keeps all your dead hair
for making up underwear
Poor little Greenie

[CHORUS]

He's so simple minded
he can't drive his module
He bites on the neon and sleeps in the capsule
Loves to be loved, loves to be loved

[CHORUS (x2)]

i would agree , it's quite an album....it's got all the right ingredients at the right time.
i like Pin Ups and Station to Station too , but Aladdin Sane is a beautiful creation.
Actually Hunky Dory is a blow to the senses too.

Anyone know about the 'stumble' on the album version of Jean Genie? The part where he says, "Get back on it".
I agree that every song on Aladdin Sane is amazing. No filler.

Love anything Bowie did with Ronson. But my favorite Bowie band was probably the Pinups line up with Aynsley Dunbar. His drumming on the 198Floor Show rocks much more forcefully than any Spiders stuff with Woody Woodmansey. That said, the outtake from the Hammersmith final Spiders show that has the Ronson & Jeff Beck guitar duel is by far my favorite Jean Genie; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7LrwhpLu0g

Inspired by Iggy Pop.

That's how the story goes.

That song has been at the top of my favorites (Bowie in general really) since I first heard it/him doing The 1980 Floor Show in 1973 on the Midnight Special. That show changed my music perspective forever.

In one of those Bowie documentaries Trevor Bolder talks about his mistake. It is one of the most famous mistakes in rock recording I think. Yes there are Bonham's bass drum squeaks, many Van Halen flubs, etc...but other than Cobain's mistake in the Man Who Sold The World solo (which is ironically another Bowie tune) the other ones you have to listen for but for both JG and TMWSTW it's like "man, they screwed up!!!". Brilliant screw ups ;)

And yes, A Lad Insane has to be his most complete album, Heathens would be the other. But I love them all! I'm a HUGE Bowie fan.

In Phoenix, we call people wearing denim trousers with a denim jacket "jean genies"

obviously, Hells Angels are exempt from this policy
