The last word on Les Pauls and Champ amps: do they work well together or not?

It depends what sound you're chasing. I don't like it myself - Champs and Les Pauls both bring a a lot of mids to the table - combine them and it doesn't make for a very versatile sound. Good for classic blues riffing, not much else.

And the hotter the humbucker, the less dynamic and definition the amp can muster, and the greater the treble roll off. It just sounds muddy and out of breath to me. As I said - it can suit blues playing, but not much else.

I can't say with tweed Champs… never owned one. I had a mid 70's Champ for a while, and with my R7 it sounded like a coffee can full of angry bees. Dirty, ratty sound- did not like.

Works for me!

It does help to have a beefier and more efficient speaker though. The stock alnicos are cheap and can't handle the added output of the humbuckers, imo.
