    I was just wondering what pedals people here bought without a first hand demo, that exceeded their expectations. On the other side of the coin, there are the total flops, feel free to include those as well.

    My more recent::RoCkIn

    Hits- NOC3 Pure Drive, MIJ SD-1, Mi Audio Crunch Box, Blues Pro, Tonefactor Huckleberry

    Misses- Keeley DS-1, Proco Vintage Rat, Diamond Fireburst (still on my board, and still looking for a suitable replacement)

    I got very good sounds with a Keeley DS-1 into a Carr Rambler.

    Lots of great pedals around: A few good ones I got without trying first were a SIB blue Echodrive, Retro Sonic Delay, ProAnalog Mark II, Tube RotoSphere MK II, Lovepedal COT50 (small box), Menatone KOTB.

    I just picked up a Jetter GSR and a Maxon OD808 and I'm really impressed with both. I wasn't expecting much, but both pedals are really solid.

    The DLS Ultra chorus was also a major expectations-exceeder.

    The two that exceeded my expectations are both from Keeley: his compressor, and the BD-2.

    I was never a big compressor guy...I hated compressors as a general rule, and I've played a few of them. His was the first that I genuinely liked. It gets tons of use from me.

    Ditto the BD-2. I liked the original unmodded BD-2 to a point, but it had some nasty flaws. Keeley's mods have given it a permanent home on my board.

    Hit: Rat pedal from the early 80's. I inherited it from a friend when I first started playing guitar, but it didn't work and sat in a closet at my parent's house since 1986. One day 20 years later I was cleaning out that old closet, found it, sent it to ProCo (who fixed it totally free of charge, btw), got it back and plugged it in...best distortion/overdrive tone I'd ever heard. I was always skeptical of Rat pedals because for some reason I thought they were "grunge" but this thing is my go-to dirt pedal now.

    Miss: Boss RE-20 Space Echo. Sounded great through my little home practice rig...put it through my main rig and it sounded like limp mush. Blech.

    Biggest Hit: I'll go with the OCD v/4. I needed an articulate core tone that cleaned up well while keeping my bottom and top end intact. My LP Standard through the OCD w/my Bad Cat Classic Cat head w/a Bruno 2x12 is the closest I've ever gotten to the tone in my head.

    Biggest Miss: The Analogman BC108. That pedal did nothing for me sonically and did not get along well with my other pedals no matter where I put it in the chain. I didn't like it by itself either. I ended up getting a Fuzz Head and couldn't be happier.
