I was looking for an improvised tool to remove some potienometer knobs off an effect I'm tinkering with and realized that two plastic zip ties attached together at the ends is the perfect tool. Once the ties are connected you just slide each tie under a side of the knob and pull outward on the ties while applying a slight amount of upward pressure.

Or you could just use your T shirt.

I just use a piece of wire since there's always plenty on the bench.Wrap it around a couple times and pull the ends taught. For some ,shoestrings do it.For others its spoons.

I use wire too, and I guess it works well enough that I keep putting off making a DIY version of Stew-Mac's fancy knob/bushing puller/extractor

That's a good idea. I like using a shoestring on one side of the knob, then the other, until the knob comes up. I guess I could tie two shoestrings together, like you have done with the zip ties. Hmmmm......

Try wrapping the shoestring around the shaft under the knob and pull the ends taught. It will lift the knob straight off.
