Pete Seeger's real legacy was the authentic life that he lived. I wrote a full piece to my local paper the week he died. Check it out here.

Would love to hear what people think. Agree? Disagree?

Far out … will looking forward to reading that when I get home from my gig tonight …

He always stuck me as genuine and not a hypocrite in any way.

There wasn't an ounce of pretentiousness in this man

In the long term, you're probably right. One day, the music and the politics of 20th century America will be long forgotten, but the message of living by your own advice cuts across cultural divides.

Did he ever renounce his communist views?

I'm not sure if he went on record as renouncing them, but he said in recent decades that he had been a proponent of a more open and democratic style of communism than China or the USSR. He wanted the government to take an active role in improving peoples' lives, but he also wanted everyone to have a voice in the political system. He certainly never advocated a dictatorship.

I think that's what most people don't realize...there's HUGE difference between the theoretical communism young idealists espouse and the BAD GUY countries that define communism to most Americans. Guys like Pete wished for a country where everyone was truly equal socially and economically. Not very realistic unfortunately.

I have a feeling that this is going to be a slippery slope that ends up getting this thread locked, but it always starts out with the "idealist" communism and quickly devolves into "bad guy" communism.

But anyhow, I will always enjoy Seeger's music, if not his political views.

I guess you thought it wasn't a good question?

Sorry yes its a good question. He wasnt a Lenin/Stalin/Mao/Pol Pot kind of attitude. There are shades, and what some wacko does with it doesnt discredit everything.

Dare i say, J****s could be called a commie...

So the label isnt immediately pejorative, and maybe you didnt mean it that way.
