    What's your favorite rum?

Mines is below. it's still illegal in the US for the time being, but it was worth risking federal prison for prior to the recent encouraging developmemts ... although if you put it in your wifes luggage ....

Oh .. The Sangsters Old Jamaica rum is pretty special too, but i don't think it's available anymore period, least not in the states. Picked that up at the source.

I tred that brand in Mexico and enjoyed it but there are other brands available in the US that I prefer. I'm really enjoying a bottle of Mount Gay Eclipse I got about a week ago. It has a very distinct molasses flavor.

Yep. Mount Gay is my favorite outside of the Havana Club 7 anos. Not really liking the move to plastic bottles.

Rum isn't my favorite thing generally, i ain't frontin any kind of connosieurship here, but even i can tell - Havana 7 transcends.

Wouldn't you know it, Bundaberg doesn't appear to be distributed in Michigan.

never had a bad time drinking rum, usually Bacardi, always a good time indeed

Fifteen men on a dead man's chest Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
The mate was fixed by the bosun's pike
The bosun brained with a marlinspike
And cookey's throat was marked belike
    It had been gripped by fingers ten;
And there they lay, all good dead men
Like break o'day in a boozing ken.
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

. Fifteen men of the whole ship's list
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Dead and be damned and the rest gone whist!
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
The skipper lay with his nob in gore
Where the scullion's axe his cheek had shore
And the scullion he was stabbed times four
And there they lay, and the soggy skies
    Dripped down in up-staring eyes
In murk sunset and foul sunrise
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

Fifteen men of 'em stiff and stark
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Ten of the crew had the murder mark!
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers' glut with a rotting red
And there they lay, aye, damn my eyes
    Looking up at paradise
    All souls bound just contrariwise
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

Fifteen men of 'em good and true
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Ev'ry man jack could ha' sailed with Old Pew,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
There was chest on chest of Spanish gold
With a ton of plate in the middle hold
And the cabins riot of stuff untold,
And they lay there that took the plum
With sightless glare and their lips struck dumb
While we shared all by the rule of thumb,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

More was seen through a sternlight screen...
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Chartings undoubt where a woman had been
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
'Twas a flimsy shift on a bunker cot
With a dirk slit sheer through the bosom spot
And the lace stiff dry in a purplish blot
Oh was she wench or some shudderin' maid
That dared the knife and took the blade
By God! she had stuff for a plucky jade
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
We wrapped 'em all in a mains'l tight
With twice ten turns of a hawser's bight
And we heaved 'em over and out of sight,
    With a Yo-Heave-Ho! and a fare-you-well
And a sudden plunge in the sullen swell
Ten fathoms deep on the road to hell,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

El Dorado 12, 15, or 21 year are all spectacular rums for sipping neat. The 12 is sweeter than the 15 yet both are nicely balanced and have cask characteristics like a fine whiskey would. The 21 is something special - almost no heat to it and several phases of flavor with a perfect mix of sweet, spice, and wood.

When I was 17 or so I had that fruit salad cottage cheese stuff at a family get-together... then sneaked off with my cousin into the eucalyptus groves and we had a huge bottle of Bacardi 151 we mixed 50/50 in a plastic gallon jug that had that cheap fruit punch in it. Drank the whole thing between us in about a half hour or an hour. Anybody care to guess what happened to the cottage cheese fruit salad?

For straight sipping, I always reach for Thomas Tew. I grab a couple bottles whenever Im in Rhode Island.

For comfort, its tough to beat a zaya and coke

Also had some of this Diplomatico Single Vintage about 3 weeks back. Very nice stuff, but not too sure how easy it is to find.

In fact, this thread's convinced me - later, gents, I'm pouring myself a small glass of Zaya now. :)

Joining you Jon, setting up snifters of the El Dorado 12, 15, and Gosling's Old. Looks like my local liquor is no longer carrying the El Dorado 21, which has me in a panic! The Gosling's is a sweeter rum and has a fairly pronounced cocoa flavor to it, which is pretty nice.

For real, or is it one of those things where "sure it's plonk, but it's OUR plonk"?

Zaya for sure - one of the nicest sipping rums I have ever had. Just pour some over THREE CUBES of ice - no more, no less. Allow the ice to melt a couple of minutes. Sip slowly. and repeat...

also - if you can find it - there is a REALLY tasty rum liquer from the west indies called "Rum Jumbie" - it's only about 40 proof, but it is really, really good - as well as being a great mixer for rum based beverages.

We have been enjoying Flor de Cana lately and it fits in budget at around $27 a bottle.
