    what's the deal??

just received a hiwatt tape echo from the emporium today. Plugged it in and I'm getting no wet signal. As far as I can tell all the controls work. Volume turns up the gain, time changes the tape speed.... I'm just getting no echoes. Anybody want to help me out?

I'm hoping I was just hooking it up wrong, but I messed around with it and the manual for like an hour and couldn't get it to rock.

any hiwatt echo owners or tape echo connosseiurs about??

I have an older one and a newer one but have generally only had issues when connecting them up quickly without checking the labels.

If you set it to wet output only with the switch on the back do you lose all the signal?

I have zero experience with the hiwatt tape echo, but sounds like maybe it needs a new tape?

I have a space echo, when that showed up it made no echo sound, but the tape was moving and sound passed through. When I replaced the tape, problem solved.

Also, make sure it's passing over all the heads properly.

yep, that is in fact the case.

I'll try and take it to a tech that services echoplexes close by. if its something simple like needing a new tape, then I might just get it repaired. I'd hate to think its something serious, but if it is I may have to just send it back to the seller and cut my losses.

Did you try the 2 head setting to see whether it's one of the playback heads?

I'm assuming that you've tried all the obvious stuff - all controls to 12 o'clock, 2 head setting, tape permanently on?

It doesn't sound too healthy then :(

My guess is it's either the recording head, tape, or a circuit fault (they absolutely do not like the wrong polarity power supply).

yeah, and he's been doing some initial trouble shooting with me and standing by. The unit was packed pretty well. I opened it up to check for faulty pots (maybe a bad echo-level pot) but they were fine. I know nothing about the inner workings of echo units, so i didn't check anything else out. I will likely take it in for a peek on wednesday to a local tech.

Hope you get this sorted as the Hiwatt is a great tape echo with negliblible impact on the base tone and great tape echoes (assuming they work of course).

dropped it off at a tech today.

He said it was likely one of two problems:

    1. bad recording heads (unlikely, since its not common for both of them to go out at the same time)

    2. Misalignment during shipping

got my fingers crossed for number 2.

EDIT: just got news from the tech. Misalignment may have been a small prob, but it appears the real issue was some sort of contact on the board. Seems like a relatively simple fix. We'll see.

Sounds promising, I hope it works.

Scenario 1 was not that improbable as there's only one recording head and 2 playback heads.

FWIW I had some fun today ABing my Hiwatts against my TC Nova - the Hiwatts sounded far better to my ears as the Nova seemed to blur the original signal with the repeats whilst changing the base tone somewhat.

Really hope you get this sorted. It's such a great delay but i'm really surprised between the individual differences in units. Mine's been sweet as a nut for 2+ years of 3 nights a week. Tried the lot, CTE stays where it is.
You can hear it in this clip of the London 65. I threw it in middle section and it just sounds so sweet. Doesn't change the core tone as Tube Guy said. Just laters with lovely echo.

Let us know how you get on

thanks for the clip! now it makes the wait even harder!

    EDIT:

looks like its all squared away. Repairs were pretty simple apparently. $75 is what they're saying. hopefully I'll be able to go pick it up soon.
