FYD Twin Reverb tube preamp into a McIntosh MC-50 solid state preamp. SSP 2x12 with JBl's. The FYD is a blackface twin preamp with all the known Jerry Garcia mods.
Amazing tone and feel. Best reverb I've ever heard. Holy grail tone for me.

Reverb on the front panel and another on the back so you mix the wet and dry to taste.

I don't need to tell you how great that sounds. I think I may have most of the attempt a similar set-up. Thanks for the clip and pics. I am going to have to look into that FYD preamp.

Now I am going to listen to some LOM for more inspiration!

That is a nice sounding reverb. I have the SMS with an mc50, and tend to augment the reverb with a styman flint to get bit more hall. I also have K's instead of D's.

Yes the reverb is amazing on the FYD. Honestly, the best I've heard.

I can't get over how cool the sound is with MC50. This is my 1st experience with the Mac solid state power amp/tube pre amp thing. Man, I am sold. It's so responsive and touch sensitive and generally super dynamic. Interestingly it takes drive pedals better than all of my amps. I have a few nice single channel clean amps but I considered selling all of them one I flipped the on switch. :eeks
I probably won't , at least not right away. I'll let one of them go for sure. This is sound I've been chasing for some time. Love it!!

Funny thing is, for some reason I don't recall anymore, you're on my ignore list. But I'm taking you off now. :beer

P.S. My SSP 2X12 weighed more than I liked with two JBLs so I sold it and how use a pair of SSP 1X12s, one with a K120, the other with an E120.

Awesome Jon. I've been following your threads on this set up. How do you run the volume on the Mac? With the short time I've had with it it seems best at full on and the output on the FYD is full on as well

And BTW, here's my backup/most portable Jerry rig:

    Head: SMS Classic Preamp (4.5 lbs.) - Carvin DCM200L (4 lbs.) - Gator 2US rack (7.5) lbs. = 16 lbs., total

Cab: TRM Hard Truckers-style 2X10 w/pair of Jensen Tornados (30 lbs.)

I'm perfectly comfortable relying on this rig for any and all Jerry tunes, also.

Wow, you must play loud! With my FYD-MC50 rig, I keep the FYD's front gain control around 5, the rear output trim pot on full, and adjust the volume on my MC50 as needed. Even playing outside live, I've never needed to crank the MC50 above half! (My own MC50, FWIW, tests as putting out a full 75W before clipping, i.e., McIntosh rated the amps at 50W for stereo apps but a serviced one in good condition is actually putting out more.)

It is loud but as you can see in the photo the FYD volume is on 2 1/2 with everything else full on.min the comfort of my rehasalal studio I can play as loud as I want.

Before waldo grabbed his marbles and ran, IIRC, his web page described Jerry as running his Fender preamp at 5-6.

The best compliment I can give is that I am just letting your clip run while I do other things on my mac. It is a nice bluesy morning. Thank you.

    Sounds really good, Brian!

I have the same setup (FYD + MC50 + SSP w/JBLs) and really love the FYD pre. I had a SMS previously, but the FYD is better, and its reverb really is phenominal. It sounds great into the MC50. If you have the opportunity, try plugging it into something like a Mesa Fifty/Fifty, and running that through your JBLs. That's also a killer setup that can rock very hard.

Thanks for posting the clip, too.

No FYD, and the mac is in the cab... A couple of very well Edgewound re-coned D/K's behind the tie dye. Some times it sots on a K130 in a pine cab.

Pre out and mac volume set at half way.

Btw - I've messed with the Princeton Reverb > Deluxe Reverb > Bandmaster > Twin Reverb set of amps for venue scaling... This pre+mac configuration is the only amp I've ever used that has a volume pot that merely scales the loudness and doesn't move you below or above a "sweet spot". The only downsize is the weight.
