Thin Tone?

Am I going deaf? My best guitar buddy just told me my tone sucks! Too thin, not enough gain. Now, I know there aren't a lot of digitech rp50 fans here, but that's what I use with various humbucker, p90 guitars through a early '80s Fender Deluxe. We're no talking arenas here, just small rooms with lots of smoke. Is he a tone snob?

that's the thing? it sounds better to me...how can you get sustain, over-drive and presence at a reasonable volume in a small room without something?
