so I have some time now :) so I'm pondering building an esquire.. if I want to keep it in the 6.5 lb range.. how light does the body need to be? also, am I crazy for thinking about doing it... my biggest concern really is the finishing of the body... might have to go MJT route

My Warmoth Tele came out to exactly 7.5 lbs with a 4 lb, 9 oz body. If you wanted a 6.5 lb guitar, you'd need a body under 4 lbs.

You need a body about 3.5 pounds to hit your target. All the non-body parts weigh about 3 pounds (neck, bridge pickups etc).

For you to go that light you are going to pay through the nose if you want alder or Ash.

Look into Sugar Pine for the body wood. I think Glendale or another of the fantastic builders use that for lightweight and resonance.

Could be dealing with some neck dive at that light of a body!

I find 7-7.5 lbs to be the sweet spot. Body should be 3.5 for a 6.5lb body.

    This is correct.
Try to find a body 3 or less.
