Thoughts on Seagull Guitars?

Have had one for a week Seagull Entourage Rustic acoustic/electric. Sounds good plugged in. My coworker wants one now too.

Nothing compares in that price range, other than perhaps Breedlove, which this one replaced.

Made in Canada is nice to, although I have nothing against Korean made guitars.

Most of the others in that price range are made in China.

My left-handed buddy has 3 of them - all have simple pickup/preamp systems, and one is a 12-string. I can't play them (righty) but he loves them, and they sound great acoustic or plugged in.....we think the headstocks look goofy, but they are very well-made guitars with tone and body

Just bought my son a Seagull Maritime for his 16th birthday. All solid wood, with pickups and an onboard tuner. Very clear mids, nice treble, and a bass that will improve with age.

I'm a "Martin guy", been playing over 40 years, and have a few very fine guitars. (Not to be snobbish, but just a point of reference as to my experience). I never met a Seagull that did anything for me, except one ... a 25th Anniversary model, solid spruce top, solid mahogany back and sides. It was a REAL surprise when I gave it a strum. I was recently looking for a guitar for the GF and Seagull was on the list. I've owned an S6 before. Instead I picked up a used Breedlove Atlas (from a TGP'er) and it's a great guitar. I haven't played any others than the one I bought so I don't know about consistency, but this one is terrific and in what I would consider the same price range.

I've owned some fairly pricey stuff - Martin 000-18GE, Martin 000-42, Taylor XXX-MS, Gibson CJ-165 - but I have to say that the Seagull SWS (solid wood series - solid sitka spruce top/solid mahogany back and sides) Mini Jumbo I bought unseen from MF a few months back still blows me away with how good it sounds. It's about 1/4 the price of the guitars listed above and I can honestly say that it sounds better to my ears than any of 'em. Not as fancy, true, but for great acoustic sound it tops them all. I'm not a specialist of this brand; in fact, this gamble was based on online reviews, not on trying Seagulls in stores. But if I could have found one of these a few years back, I could have saved myself a lot of money searching for "the one" from the stock list of Martins, Taylors and Gibsons.

Seagulls are indeed decent guitars but I'm one of those who don't like the headstock. I believe that Simon & Patrick guitars are also made by Godin. They seem to offer a similar line to Seagull but have a more traditional headstock shape.

Again, just to reiterate: The Seagull headstock may not LOOK better (to some), but it WORKS better. That's why they do it.

Seagull are their higher end instruments, and thus their primary concern is function.

Simon and Patrick/Art & Lutherie are their entry level brands, and they keep the traditional-looking headstock to visually appeal to the general public/first time buyers/etc.

I don't dispute what you're saying but aesthetics are important to many. Besides, Martin and Gibson acoustics have been using traditional shaped headstocks for many years and they certainly aren't considered "entry level" brands. I'm sure if I compared an all solid wood Seagull to a similar S&P, I wouldn't hear or feel much difference but I would enjoy the looks more. YMMV.

I think there's nearly aways something we would change about a non-custom made instrument. I didn't like the gloss neck on my Gibson CJ-165, nor the slotted headstock on my Martin 12-fretter, and I would have preferred my Taylor GC8 to respond a bit better to capo-use. I don't find the headstock on my Seagull SWS Maritime Mini Jumbo to be the most aesthetically pleasing one I've ever seen, but it's no big deal. It looks decent enough, and what really counts is the sound and feel, both of which are excellent. And heck, if the headstock shape serves a structural purpose, I'm more than happy!

I've had an S6 for years. It sounds and plays great. The neck is a bit wide for some, so you definitely need to play one to make sure it's your cup of tea. I like the S6, it's a basic, no frills, solid top guitar. Mines probably 20 years old, back from when they were a small company. I think I paid $150 for it.
The cedar top is soft with a very thin nitro finish, so expect it to show dings and dents and some finish wear over time. That's part of the beauty of it IMO. The S6 body shape is a round shouldered dread, just about like my Gibson J-45. And the neck is short scale and a bit wider that most.
Anyway, I think they're great guitars for the money. Mine is my beater. I don't care if it gets dinged, scratched, or bumped.

Simon & Patrick is related to them too. Check out their Showcase series used for a more traditional look if that actually matters as much as some people say it does here... really stellar guitars that if you find used can be an absolute steal. I remember one of my first posts here got blasted by a guy because Simon & Patrick wasn't on par with Martin... whatever...

I truly feel that my all-solid sitka and mahogany Seagull Maritime Mini-Jumbo stands up alongside, in terms of sound quality and playability, two Martin 000-18GEs, a Larrivee L03R, and two Taylors - a GC3 and a GC8 - that I've had. It has seriously led me to question the wisdom of coughing up $1,500-3000 on a production line guitar. No doubt the really high-end Martins and Larrivees would trump it, as would the many of the boutique brands like Collings and Goodall, but I haven't yet found much added quality in mid-range Martins, Taylors and Gibsons, aside from fancy trimmings, that would make me say they are worth paying at least twice the price for. That's a purely personal reaction, of course, and no doubt many will disagree.

My Seagull Artist model is my favorite acoustic that I've ever played and I've had extensive time with high end martins and a few gibsons. Its got a really fat tone that I love. Only complaint is that its not very chimey like some acoustics are.

I've had my Performer CW Flame Maple for about a week now. I'm looking forward to seeing how it sounds after it opens up after a while.
