I'm about to order a custom TA and have a hard time picking the best possible neck shape. I'm between these two:

Happy Medium: .825 at the 1st fret to .915 at the 12th*
Even-Taper: .810-inch thick at the first fret tapering to .870 at the 12th fret*

There is some variation between the thicknesses but I'd like to know how the back shapes feel like. Are they C, D or V? I don't have a chance to try these different shapes personally.

    Thanks!

I have an even taper .030 over on my Drop Top. I would call it a C shape. Very comfortable.

IIRC the happy medium is the old cobra std neck. That neck feels like a D shape to me. The even taper is the old 62 roundback, and as been said it's a C. The 62 RB feels a little small to me in the cowboy chord area with the 1 5/8 nut fwiw.

TA makes one of the best necks in the business in the even taper and +.30 taper IMO.

Yep, I believe that's correct. I'd classify mine as a very soft V shape. Exceptionally comfortable, whatever it is!

You guys make the decision even harder... :) Is the Even Taper close Fender strat C-profile?

I have this exact shape on a T Classic and its an awesome neck. Not huge but substantial. The Even Taper is a great option all around. Go bigger or smaller depending on the thickness you like.

I have a Short T with a Happy Medium neck and heavy frets as well as a Bulldog with an Even Taper +.050 neck and heavy frets. I'll be durned if I can tell the difference between them. Both are short scale. Both are 1 11/16". I go from one to the other and simply don't really feel a difference. Maybe I am just not a sensitive guy...

    Hard to say really.
For a start the satin feel completely changes the playability of the neck for me.

After playing my TAG's (and the Suhr) and then going back to a regular poly or nitro neck I feel like I am wading through treacle.

    :agree

Roy can walk you through all the neck shapes and how oversize/undersize will affect the feel.

Thanks for the comments! I live on another continent so calling them isn't easy but I might try it.

For those who have played the Happy Medium, how does it really feel? If the Even Taper is like a C, what about about HM?

Check out my thread on neck shapes and sizes. The depth doesnt matter as much as the shape and shoulder.

Totally agree. Thus I'm here to learn about the actual shapes and shoulders :) One more question, which Anderson neck would be closest to the Gibson 60s Slim Taper?

Try asking at the Tom Anderson forum - Tom himself is on there nearly everyday.
