"The Tone Merchants Clinic" - Tomo Fujita Master Class

Tomo sent me an advanced copy of the Clinic DVD a few weeks ago and I wanted to share my thoughts with everyone. The clinic was held June 4th at Tone Merchants, down in Orange, California. I was eagerly awaiting this dvd, as I wasn't able to make the clinic. I would love to get some feedback from those of you that were there.

Much like Tomo's "Accelerate Your Guitar Playing", this is not a clinic watching a guy shredding like crazy. Tomo begins by playing "Confidence Cat", a tune off his first cd. Played to a backing track, this tune sets the mood and lets everyone know what's in store for the night. The DVD is broken down into 20 sections, with the addition of a few of Tomo's tunes thrown in for illustration. Some of these sections include:

    -Good Clean Technique
    -Playing Over Chord Changes
    -Triads Over Songs
    -Voice Leading
    -Comping Ideas, Triads
-Slap Guitar/Walking Bass Lines (My favorite section)
    -Wah Expression Technique
    -Playing "Colors"
    -How To Practice Jazz
    -How to Use a Metronome

There's a ton more, including a section where Tomo explains his gear, and how he gets the tones he does. This was obviously a fun clinic, and one of Tomo's strength's as a teacher is the ability to connect with his students. He brings a humor and warmth in his approach, and it is easy to see that he loves what he does. Plus, it doesn't hurt that he's a killer funk/blues/jazz player! One of the coolest parts of this clinic is that not only does Tomo play very musical ideas, but they are ideas and techniques you can take home and really apply to your playing to make it better. I also found myself laughing from time to time, as Tomo has a very self-deprecating manner and drops jokes and stories during his presentation. There is lot's of excellent information presented here, and it's presented in a fun environment by an accomplished player. What more could you ask for?

The production of the dvd was excellent in sound and you can clearly see what Tomo is playing. I was really impressed with his tone, very expressive and perfect for his music. Backing tracks were used for Tomo's songs, and they were nicely integrated into his presentation. It would be cool to see Tomo interact with a live band, but I guess you will need to catch him on tour in Japan or make one of his steady gigs on the East Coast. Seeing this clinic also makes you wish you could take lessons from the man himself, he is inspiring to listen to.

If you already own Tomo's "Accelerate" DVD, this would be an excellent addition in your studies. The Clinic builds and illustrates on the techniques presented in the Instructional DVD, but stands on its own as a learning tool. Plus, it's just good fun! Tomo is making this available through his website, I believe. I hope he chimes in here with all the pertinent information on how to get your own copy. Check out Tomo's website, I highly recommend this Clinic DVD!

I've received my copy of the Tone Merchants DVD about a week ago, and finally had the time to finish watching it :D

Firstly, i must agree that the production of the dvd is very good. Technically, i think Tomo emphasise very much on foundation...which will be very essential building blocks if you want to develop good techniques. The bulk of the clinic is actually more focused on developing melodic sense and musical aspects on guitar. You get to learn all about developing very solid rhythm chops and how to solo over chord changes.

2 hours of video, 1 man with a guitar, coupled with his earnest attitude to teach and share with a great sense of humour. It's really an enjoyable video to simply watch or learn from, with contents ranging from simple blues comping to learning and application of triads etc.

I wished to take lessons personally from Tomo, but that isn't possible. His materials opened up alot of doors for me and answered alot of doubts for a self learning guitarist like me. I highly recommend this dvd for anyone of any level to give this video a try, especially if you're very interested in solid rhythm playing or improvisation.

P.S: hope i've done the dvd justice, it's my first time reviewing :p

    Hi John,

Sorry for my late reply. I have been really busy with
my work and kids activities. It's all good stuff though.

First of all, thank you so much for taking time to examine
my Tone Merchant clinic dvd. I know you wanted to come
to this clinic. So I am glad that you could enjoy watching
    this dvd.

I felt really good how this clinic dvd came out. My clinic
is always very spontaneous and I react to live audiences.
It's important to record the whole show. So I can learn myself
later. Just like a live music.

I hope people can learn about how important to get
"Good tone" and about gears at gear section.

Last of all, I am glad to hear that I made you laugh!
It's all about music. It's supposed be fun right?

I came here from Japan 19 years ago with no English skill.
I happy to see myself that I can communicate with
real American people. That's real treat for me.

Thank you so much for your review on my clinic dvd.

I just wanted to tell everyone here what they probably already know; Tomo seems to be a really great guy!
I recently emailed him with a speaker question. He has never heard of, or talked to me before. He replied VERY quickly, with some great first hand experience, and advice.
It seemed as if he was sincerely interested in helping a fellow guitarist. As a guitar instructor myself, I know the joy of sharing info, and all the other "cool stuff" with fellow players.
I will be emailing him about that clinic DVD, for sure!

    Thanks Tomo!

    Hi Testament,

Sorry for my super late reply.

Thank you so much for your review on my Tone Merchants
clinic DVD. As you saw, that was a lot of fun! I had a great
time being there at Tone Merchants.

Having a good foundation is key to success your playing
... I love to teach about "TONE" not just patterns.

I got to keep working on my sense of humor!
Guide tone comping is very useful. Actually we are
working soloing ideas ...using guide tone and triads
over regular blues changes, jazz blues changes at
my blues/funk class (Berklee) tomorrow. Then this week
I will show them how to use "Walking bass line"

You can't say "That isn't possible" You need to believe deeper...
that (your magnet)will pull me into Sigapore. Someday I will
have a chance to go to Singapore. Then it's possible, right?

You have to believe yourself. Believing is very powerful!

    Thanks,

    Tomo

I am also fortunate to have a copy of Tomo's "Clinic at Tone Merchants" DVD. I highly recommend this to everyone. It is both enjoyable and educational simultaneously. This DVD is incredible in that it carries the spirit of actually being there. I was totally drawn into it. Tomo plays effortlessly with taste and great tone as always; moreover, he also does a great job of presentation providing insight and wisdom along with humor. And speaking of presentation, the camera work is very good focusing attention where it belongs. The sound quality is excellent.

I came away from this DVD enthused and inspired!

    Gary

p.s. Thanks again, Tomo! I am working on my triads and having a great time.

    Thank you for your words.

I am enjoying my Eminence speakers with Bob Burt cabs.
It was all my pleasure talking with you about speakers
choices. I am trying to reply as much as I can.
Sometime I can't answer right away when I get so many
    email in English and Japanese.

Everyone plays different and each person likes certain
tone... just like foods. So I would like to hear more about
yourself, that makes me to understand person's match.

Glad to hear that you teach guitar too. Great!
Teaching job is not easy, but it is rewarding job.
Please help more guitarists. I usually go to lunch
with a bunch of my students when I am at Berklee.

Hope you are enjoying my clinic dvd.

    Thank YOU!

    Tomo

    Hi Gary,

Sorry for my late reply. I have been busy for working my
record project. I got 5 more new tunes recorded. I will be
back to the studio next week.... Hope you can hear this cd
early 2006. Very funky! I think I am getting good tone.

Thank you so much for your kind words on my TM clinic dvd.
The sprit there was created by people there at Tone Merchants.
People 's reaction and power made me play better... I worked
on my preparation ... but I improvised most of it there...
just like live music. If I didn't see LeonC there... I never play
that one section. I am very lucky to be able to higher
great video guy. He did excellent job.

My students (here and Japan) are really enjoying this dvd.
They use this as a supplement material. A part of our lesson.
I got more comment that people are saying... "Funny"

I am curious ... which section/title do you like?
Many said "Play over chord changes" Maybe you liked
"Triads over song" ? I am happy to hear that you
are having a great time with triads.

Now I have to go back to my work.

Wow, this is an old thread pulled up! The dvd doesn't come with any tab or notation, unless Tomo has added this since I got mine. I would suggest contacting him at his website and asking directly. He's a good guy! :)

    Hi John,

TM dvd is still going! I think most people would like cds/dvd package so add a lot of material include Just Funky's full transcription regular notation & tab. Thank you so much for your support!
