Tonemaster/Magnatone 213 clips - lower volume with pedals

I did some clips for another thread with a 70's Greco LP I've been rehabbing and I thought some folks might enjoy hearing the 213 a little. I'm using it at low living room volume, 1 clip with a Timmy in front and then another clip with a Keeley RAT in front. Really pleasing tone. I've needed to spend more time with the Kelley RAT to really understand the different settings better and this is giving me a good opportunity to do so.

Anyhow, you can get excellent breakup out of the amp by pushing it, but that'll p*$$ off the wife, so it's a low volume day:)

Hey can you post a clip of you plugged straight into amp?
Maybe turn it up all the way... :)
I'm trying to find out if this amp (model 214) sounds anything like Phil X's on Youtube.
Thanks,
-Keith

Good sounds. Do you know if the tonemasters are the same as the magnatones 213? I read they were very close but had some differences.

Lee - Sounds good. Original speaker? Oxford? Does your model use a 5Y3 or a 5V4 rectifier?

Hi guys. Thanks for the feedback! I'll be away from the amp for a few days, but when I return home I'll check out the specifics you're interested in and also try and do some clips with the more towards the dimed side of things.

I've been trying to get my hands on that amp for a while now, but they have seemingly shot up in price or more people have discovered the awesomeness of this amp.

Lee - .....or does yours use diode rectification, like PhilX's Tonemaster and my old Titano 314 ;)

I'm sure the Magnatone / Tonemaster community are cursing Phil X for blowing their best kept secret :)

Uh...there was no "Tonemaster" community before Phil, LOL!

So several folks have asked for some better pics and some more clips. Pics I'm great at...the clips...eh. But I did a clip with the amp dimed as several folks have requested. The chassis still has some annoying rattles I need to track down, but overall it sounds pretty cool. Holds together well and doesn't sound like it's going to explode. Mind you, this is with no pedals turned on in front of it. I'm sure if you hit it harder you'd get some nice "falling apart" sounds going on.

The clip is my Gibson G0 LP with Lollar Imperials through the 214.

I also play for a few seconds at the end with my newly resurrected Ampeg Echo-Jet slaved off the 214's external speaker jack. The Echojet is a Jet that turns into a reverb unit for a remote amp and sounds quite amazing. My tech installed a female speaker input on the Echojet, so I just plug a speaker cable from the external speaker plug on the 214 to the EJ and it's on. Adjust volume/tone to taste. Sadly, my playing will do it no justice.

To answer a question I've been asked, this guy has no tube rectifier but does have an extra hole in the chassis where one might have lived... I've never seen a 213, some I'm not sure where exactly the rectifier lived. This amp was recapped and gone through by my now boss, Bryan Sours of Sour Sound in Portland, Oregon. He's clearly done a recap. The tubes in this thing are amazing... I bought it from a guy locally who'd just had Bryan recap it, so it came as you see it.

Lee, thanks for posting these pics and the clip. Was the amp on Normal, Bright or Mellow when you recorded it?

How many diodes make up the rectifier section there? Two?

However it's set in the amp is how it was when I played it, so I guess it was set to normal.

Re: the rectifier section, I'm not sure exactly. I can post a higher res copy of the guts if that would help.

odge - there are just two diodes in the rectifier. Check out the pics of power section in the Titano 314.

As I mentioned to you earlier, these are the same amps. You can see that the PT is a little smaller than in the 213 and that there is a plugged hole where the tube rectifier goes on a 213. You can also see the smaller 6AN6.
