I got a Bluguitar rig and am not sold on the gain channles. It does however have a great clean platform.
for hard rock what are some tight gain options with being too compressed and overly sterile?

Hard Rock equals what for you?

For me that would mean pretty much Marshall Plexi tones... Harder shades of hard rock? Bring in JCM 800... See where I am going with that?

So, what I am trying to say is, if you could narrow what you are looking for, folks could be more helpful!

Ethos twe-1 - best hardrock amp in a box pedal

I think the Rat might be way more compressed than OP is looking for.

I'm trying to understand, you have a blues based guitar rig and like the cleans on it, but want a hard rock tone too, something that isn't too compressed. Is that right? What kind of amp do you have now?

I have a Roland Blues Cube Artist, which is my base clean tone which I like a lot, then use pedals for all of my other pedals. I really like the Keeley D&M Drive, 2 pedals in one. So you get a hard rock tone on one side that has some compression to it, but not too much, and the other side has a Klone type overdrive, which is not compressed at all, and works well with both sides on. Back off the gains to achieve a more medium type of gain.

I just got another Keeley pedal tonight, the Filaments which is definitely hard rock to maybe metal, might be more gain that you want or need, but I'm digging it quite a bit so far.

Since I got my super strat up and running I've started to be interested in such pedals.

I have a limited selection, but right now my favourites are the 40th DS-1, opamp muff RI, and one of the SNS mosfuratus, I'm afraid to guess, it's the one that cleans up with the guitar's volume knob, I have the black magic and the low gain mojo sustain white one.

After rereading OP, I'm thinking the muff is probably too compressed for the job, and it's not a distortion really, but I just love it.

Should’ve been a little more specific in your thread title. As you already see, people are just gonna come here and spit out a list of their personal favorite ODs and Fuzzes without even reading the OP. Anyways, assuming you want something less compressed and/or more tweakable than a RAT; my favorite Hard Rock Distortions, until next week, at least:

Ibanez Super Metal (vintage or mini)
    Joyo Uzi (Friedman based?)
    DOD Gunslinger (Digitech SC-2 based)
    Boss SD-2 (lead channel)
    Marshall Shredmaster

I don’t have a ton of experience with boutique stuff for distortion, as you may have noticed. My fuzz addiction sucks up most of that disposable income.

Does a pedal that sounds and feels like an entire amp count as a 'dirt box'?

    .

A Klon clone (like a $25 Golden Horse) into a RAT (or $25 Black Rat) with the guitar volume turned down.
A Tube Screamer (or clone) into a DS-1, one at low gain the other at less than 50% gain.
A Fuzz (Fuzz Face or Big Muff Pi) clones (like the $20 Azor 303 Fuzz) and turn the guitar volume back to 2,3,4 or so on the knob to clean up.

Stacking pedals makes for a tone that is 1+1=5 kind of scenario. You get a lot more than either pedal can do on its own.

Gotcha, I thought maybe something like this, just not familiar with this brand. A preamp then, versus a more traditional combo amp.
