Taylor Swift has to be in there.

If not in the #1 spot she would be 2nd or damn close.

I already feel old and out of touch without having to go through this exercise.

    Taylor Swift number 11.

You'll be surprised by the list. I never would have guessed 3 of the 5

Dr. Dre did the Beats deal, so he is probably at the top of the list along with Jimmy Iovine.
    Beyonce and Jay-Z
    Taylor Swift
    Bruno Mars
    Katy Perry

Most likely it's a lot of estates or legacy acts. Beatles, Elvis, Zeppelin, etc

New music, although popular now, still doesn't get nearly as much airplay as the classics. And broadcast performances are what BMI and ASCAP collect, not just current popularity

Dr Dre is in his own world. Is he sharing his money with the world or is he another evil "the man"? He dominates. 620 million.

    Living or dead or both?

    Living, I would say

    Taylor Swift
    Lady Gaga
    Katy Perry
    The Rolling Stones
    Toby Keith

EDIT: If you are only counting royalties then drop the Stones and add maybe Bruno Mars

Not too shabby for a guy who hasn't released a new album since the 90's. :)

Gotta give him credit. He certainly has business smarts.

I have no guess, so I read the article.

What you have is a couple of artists making tons of money in business, like Beats and Pepsi, and some oldies making bank on tour, not a lot of real new music making money on this list, if any, because Beyonce only put out a greatest hits album in 2014.

You guys do realize that all of this averages out to a little more than $1000 per member and if you take the top earners (and their cash) out that leaves pennies for the average musician...

"BMI paid out more than $840 million in royalties to its members, which include more than 650,000 songwriters and music publishers."

I'd guess Dr Dre would have to be #1. The Eagles, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Madonna, and whoever is the #1 country artist and whoever is the #1 DJ. A couple years ago, some DJ was #2 or #3, I think.

Taylor Swift will have a big year this year with the tour. U2 is probably up there. I'd have put her on my list if you hadn't said she was #11. Then the Katy Perry/Bieber/One Direction/Miley Cyrus. Paul McCartney has been in the news quite a bit lately. Jon Bon Jovi has also. They were on the Today Show recently so they are probably on tour. It wouldn't surprise me to see that Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones are somewhere in the top 30.

So much for the fun of guessing I guess.

Some like Dre were guessed and the steam ran out. RedRock posted a link that was quite different from the one I saw.
I'm guessing just like most successful people and businesses, large sums of money are given to charity.
Many are low profile. I have no hate for those who achieve success. I wish I were one of them.

You could do a lot of good with 620 million a year income.

If we're talking about royalty earnings, does a DJ earn royalties?

Pretty sure Dr. Dre also owns Beats, the headphone lines. That's probably where MOST of his stated earnings originate.

Lists like these are sometimes misleading when you think just of selling records + earnings from tours. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus are still in the top-5 earners each year for 'golf guys.'
