This was TOPS when I was a kid. When I watched later, I caught how much recycled aerial footage there was across the whole movie. I applaud the lengths they went to while filming, but I can't not see that. Still good drama when it comes to the flight and dogfight scenes.

I had full intention of joining the Navy as an aviator, until I realized I was never going to hit the height requirement. The F-14 still lives in a very special place for me due to this movie. But in today's political world (we don't have one huge arch enemy), and have less vested interest in the F-18 or maybe other platforms... I just wonder where this can lead that it will be interesting.

Movies like True Lies shifted from Soviet enemies to terrorist threats as the main protaganist. Selling movies overseas is far too important to name China as the baddie now. So then it's got to be some rogue nation? Stolen planes? etc. It's all about where they take the plot with this one, and the trailer doesn't really say.

The original providing the platform for my love of flying and fighter jets is the sole reason I need to see this.

Presuming a plot may be a bridge too far.

I probably won't see it in a theater. My wife hates going to the movies and my kids have no Top Gun nostalgia.

It may work better if it's all about the competition and no other outside threat exists.

    Aside from arthritis, that is.

I heard they were focusing on the "man vs machine" (drone) trope.

Dude, all I want is a fun time. My standard movie metric now is: did I have fun? Tom Cruise can make fun movies. He's a little freakin' weird, but I mean, he's less than one Standard Deviation of Weirdness from the Hollywood mean.

I've never found a single pair of Aviator Sunglasses that look good on me.

This was briefly soul crushing back then, having tried a few pairs.

    Oh well. Life goes on.

I clicked on that link quicker than Goose's head hit the canopy.

    :)

Anyhoo... another one of those a year ago.... "ehhh... why are they remaking it" to after watching the trailer.... ... "******** in!!! Now I really want to see it."

Looks cool. You know it's going to have a horrid plot, and mostly be an excuse to see some cool fighter jet scenes. But the fighter jet scenes do look pretty awesome, and actually REAL compared to the first movie. And now he's flying solo in f-18's. Seems more fitting for "Maverick". I can dig it.

It's funny, if you spend any time in the gay community, especially in the mid 30's to 40's age, so many of them will tell you the beach volleyball scene was one of the first moments they realized. Definitely a scene that was watched and rewound and worn out on the ol' VHS for many a young growing boy. :)

To be fair, I think I wore that soundtrack out on my Walkman in elementary school. Steve Stevens, awesome. Honestly the more I think about, that and Bill and Ted and probably the reason I took up guitar.

    Anyway... looks cool.

The film has gone way over budget-

mainly because Tom has insisted on re-shooting those volleyball buttocks-slapping
    scenes over and over.

The new recruit's buttocks are beet-red, yet Cruise insists on re-takes. :D

He wants some Butts. I believe that line was also suggested by Tom Cruise.

I hate that I really want to see this. My friend who was in the navy said something like 35 years you either advance in rank or leave. I loved the original and really like how they filmed the cockpit scenes in the trailer. I don't know if they used an actual jet with some sort of double seat configuration or CGI but it looks quite convincing that cruise is piloting these jets.

Flashing the Pepsi logo is an "ace" move.

The first time I ever heard about that scene was when I read a cards against humanity card about homoerotic volleyball montage or something. It's interesting what things triggered that community for instance the Conan the barbarian movie.
