is the top boost channel on the s16 pretty much the same as the CR?
From the website, I gathered that the s16 derived from AC15 and the CR derived from AC30 cut the power down in half?
I feel like I don't get much chime out of my CR compared to an Vox AC15 hand wired and thinking maybe the s16 is the better amp for me?

Not really into the ef86 channel so only talking about the top boost channel on the s16.
Please let me know the difference between the CR and S16 I've you had them both.

Thanks

Yeah, I've owned both. But the older model CR's with SS and GZ34 rectifiers. The new ones have an EZ81 rectifier and there may be some other minor circuit changes, too. The S16 full EQ channel was different than my CR's, mainly in how the EQ functioned. My CR's had the EQ circuit where the treble control actually cut the bass response past about 2 oclock, I think this is the typical Top Boost circuit. The S16 functioned differently, the treble control just affected treble frequencies, and the mid control affected the voicing as well as the overall gain, with the mid control off the sound was scooped reminiscent of a BF Fender, with the mid control dimed the amp sounded very gainy like an angry Marshall. :) And OMG, the EF86 channel on the S16 is pure balls to the wall RAWK! No MV on the EF86 channel, though, so it's loud. I thought the S16 was the more versatile of the the two amps. But again, a reminder that I've never played one of the newer EZ81 rectified CR's. And remember, you can employ an ABY box on the S16 to use the amp as a channel switcher......or combine channels.......lot's of great sounds to be had using the amp that way.

Hmm I might have to look into the Supreme 16. As I feel the CR is more Marshall. Maybe I should try Celestion Alnico or Scumnico first before actually thinking of getting another amp.

Any chance you've tried 65amps Lil Elvis? Curious how it would compare to the S16 as they seemed to have a very effective Master Volume.

I have not played any 65 Amps. What speaker are you using in your CR? Celestion G12H-30? A Celestion Blue would definitely change the tonality, less bass, more upper mids.

Just an fyi, here are some clips I made a while back with the S16 using an ABY box out front, and a s/s/h Strat type Suhr guitar:

combined channels

full EQ channel with the mid control all the way down

full EQ channel followed by the EF86 channel

It's got the G12H30 in it at the moment.
I have tried Celestion V-Type, G12-35XC (A bit too honky) and Bad Cat Celestion Speaker (Quite nice actually).
I have Greenback RI coming this weekend - 8ohm though - not sure ohm matters.
I'll thinking of getting Scumnico or the new Celestion Cream Alnico.

What tubes do you have in your CR and S16? Stock or NOS?
I've tried 12ax7s: Tungsram, Telefunken, ASW, and like RCA Best as it's has this great clarity to it...

Love experimenting with my CR...

Nope. Go for the Scumback S75-PVC Alnico.

I liked the Ei 12AX7 in V1 of the CR's I owned. I never messed with the stock tubes in the S16, it sounded great right out of the box.

Speaker-wise, the Celestion Blue is a really unique sounding speaker and worth trying at some point.

I have played the club royal and to my ears it is a tighter feeling and playing amp. Nice tight and chimy. There are two versions of the Supreme 16. The early ones have a smaller output transformer and I would say they are looser feeling and they have a great transformer overdrive thing going on. The later versions have the larger Heyboar transformers and they have more headroom, clarity and definition. I agree if you can crank the EF86 channel with a good GEC genelex or old Mullard the detail and complexity is amazing. I was told that a EF86 has a gain of 1000 vs. 100 for a 12AX7. They are really sensitive.

The early Supreme 16 makes a good rock amp one of the guys in Candlebox uses one. This video may help you hear the chime in the Supreme 16. This is an early model I had:
