Thought I'd just post some live clips of my TopHat Super Deluxe 2x12 (33w from 2x6L6 in Class A). Stock EH tubes, sounds even better with the TAD small bottle 6L6s I've got in it now. Rest of the rig was a cheap Turser semi-hollow with humbuckers (since replaced with sweet '83 Ibanez AM50), TIM, McFuzz Standard, Barber Direct Drive SS, Prophecy Sound Rubber Fetish envelope filter, & Boss DD-20 delay. Some are from the soundboard, some are from the room, the first clip is both. The other guitarist played a Strat > Crybaby > TS9 > Silvertone 40w 2x12 head/cab.

The band was an improv-based acid jazz type thing for the most part, this particular gig was last summer and the last one before the complete self-destruction of the group....Actually the trumpet player/singer/"leader"/control freak went mental and literally berated us ONSTAGE for about 2 minutes for what he perceived as a missed cue on an ending  which almost led to a fistfight afterwards and was the last of many straws for me....

Thanks Harry, I appreciate the kind words.

BTW, just for grins, here's a clip of the tantrum mentioned above. If you listen closely you can hear him going off......IT'S NOT FUNNY! Well, it wasn't at the time, but it is now :D Funny thing is, when he brought the soundboard recording to the next and last band meeting, he had edited out all of this, fortunately I had the room recording on a minidisc

    Hey Meterman,

I enjoyed your clips. Thanks for sharing.

Is it really relevant how much dues you've paid before I can enjoy your clips though?

I think you're right to some extent that if we just heard John Mayer out of context without knowing who it was, we'd think he was a young and budding player but perhaps nothing to make you think he'd be the next Jimi or Stevie. It's just in the context of all the fame and fortune and accolades that folks feel compelled to put him down.

If you think about it, putting someone else's playing down is really more a statement of yourself than the person you're putting down because when it comes down to it, your own music makes a louder statement than comments about someone else's music.

What I've noticed is that many of the greatest players that I admire (Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Pat Martino etc.) don't feel the need to put other players down - Particularly in a public forum.

What you say privately is another matter. In the context of a guitar lesson I might tell a student a personal thought about a particular player but I just think it's in bad taste to put someone down publicly.

I guess folks feel that Mayer's made enough dough that it doesn't matter. Maybe they're right. I dunno...

Thanks for the kind words about the clips Jack. Not really my style to post anything but what the hell

As for being in bad taste to criticize another player, maybe so, but it's a discussion page after all and fair game IMHO though obviously not very constructive considering the amount of time I've wasted on this discussion!
FWIW I've never said Mayer's playing sucked, I can't stand what original material I've heard of his but he can obviously play well and seems to be growing, which is all you can ask of any musician. It's more his cocky attitude I have a problem with, maybe he's mellowed as evidenced by the quotes posted from his interview, but being from the same Atlanta scene he came out of I may have some insight into him that others don't.....which is simply to say that there are plenty of anecdotes around here of a pre-famous JM bragging that he was going to be a huge star, putting other local players down, etc. Maybe that's what it takes to make it, I don't know, but arrogance is a quality that really turns me off to a musician and people in general, it pushes my buttons obviously....but you are absolutely right, many of the greats don't have the time or inclination to dis other players, they just do their thing and let it speak for itself. Good quality to aspire to......
