I grew up in Southern CA real near Glendale, and my parents (who have been gone from CA for about 19 years) just recently moved TO Glendale, and my wife and I flew out for Christmas and New Year's, so while we were here I decided it would be foolish not to try to go over and see Ron's shop. We just got back from there, and what a cool experience. Ron is the nicest guy you could ever meet, and was very hospitable and gracious in showing us around and talking about guitars. He's got some of the coolest wood and makes some of the most unbelievable guitars in the world. It was so cool to see where it all happens and all of the cool equipment and guitars in progress. Just great, great stuff. [And no, I didn't get any photos...sorry!] =(

To those who have Ron building a guitar for you, my apologies for interrupting him today! ;-) I plan on getting an order in myself, once he starts taking custom orders again.

Ron, THANK YOU for welcoming us and showing us around, and for being gracious with your time...we very much appreciate it. Keep up the great work!

Having just dealt with him in getting a Jr90 I agree he's a great guy. One day I'll head out west and check out the shop.

Is that on a rosewood neck? If so, I saw it and it looks incredible. His detailed inlay work is ridiculous...just awesome.

    Mods,

I would like to report an infraction. Offering up a thread on a tour of Ron Thorn's shop without photos - that has to be against the rules!!

    Cheers,

    Edward

I got to spend 4 days helping out at Ron's shop before NAMM and it was such a fantastic time! Got the in-depth tour and helped him "grade" some new tops (how could any of the tops he picks up be anything less than a AAAAAAAAAAA grade top? :AOK) too! Ron is one of the greatest people I've ever met, no joke. Just a kind guy who makes some of the most killer guitars I've ever seen, touched or heard. :dude

Agreed, Ron is a class human being and a terrific talent. I love dropping by the shop, the highlight on NAMM week for me is the Thorn Event on the last Sunday.

It took a flight time of over 13 hours and a 90 minute car drive to get there, but my trip to Ron`s shop in January 2007 was worth every minute. Top guy performing outstanding craftsmanship, with beautiful results.

Sorry guys, I wish I had photos to post, but all of my flash cards were full at that point (Rose Parade and all that), so I didn't even take the camera. I will say that Ron has some inbelievable pieces of wood. Just crazy nice.

    For future reference:

    (1) Set VCR/DVD recorder/DVR to record Rose Parade coverage.

    (2) Save card space for Thorn shop pics.

    (3) Post pics on TGP for the bored gear page members to drool over.

    (4) ???????????

    (5) Profit!

    ;)

    =)

Thanks. Actually, we camped out for the Rose Parade, and I wasn't even sure that the shop would be open while we were here. By the time I found out they'd be there, my cards were full. Oh well, it was a great trip, and I'll just have to send mind thoughts of the experience to you lonely TGP'ers!

A bunch of us TGP'ers went to Ron's shop a few years back.
Just a little place off the freeway.
But the artistry/wood contained in that little workshop was just too cool!
And Ron was like a kid with a bunch of new presents he wanted to share with us. The man has passion, and skill!
