    Hey all,

My brother is marrying a girl from Mexico. She's already here in Canada but the wedding will be there. My wife and I will be flying into Mexico City and then taking a bus to San Miguel.

My brother's fiance has tried to downplay how dangerous it is, that lasted until her sister visited and commented on how nice it was to wear jewellery in public :confused.

Any of avid travelers have some advice on how to stay safe? Places to avoid, things to be aware of etc. I'm sure it's not as dangerous as I think, but I also think as a white 6'2" Canadian I should exercise caution.

    Any tips?

I've got a buddy who travels to Mexico once a month on business and has never had a shady story.

I think the usual common sense applies. If you are going to a neighborhood/city that has a known population of people that are somewhat desperate, then do you best not to draw attention to yourself with clothes, jewelry, shoes, etc. I suspect that if you are going to a wedding, then you will be confined to a pretty tight/safe radius unless you choose to wander around.

That said, I've known plenty of folks that have gone there in the past few years without incident. I don't think it's quite as scary as the media would like you to believe.

Only if the wedding band plays Mustang Sally and you're successfully able to find a rope and a wobbly chair!:idea

Depends on who your private security mercs are. Given where you're going, I recommend ICTS or Academi.

    j/k :p

I'd say there's no more than a 40% chance you'll be killed and an 80% chance you'll be kidnapped though I've gotta give it to you straight... your chances of being killed go WAY up if you get kidnapped.

You're screwed. Sell your gear before you go so we can enjoy it.

Act as if you are travelling to the US. Assume everyone has a gun, don't talk to random strangers, don't display phones, jewerly, etc. While Mexico City is relatively safe, it's still a third world country you are in. Also not sure about bus travel in Mexico. Can you fly closer to the destination and take a car from there?

Go and be thankful it's not Chicago. Don't venture off away from where you're staying. No jewelry or fancy watches. Be aware of your surroundings.

The vast majority of the crazy shady stuff happens at the Mexico/US border and is a result of the illicit drug trade.

I have a good friend who travels to Mexico City regularly with his girlfriend (who's from there) and he loves it.

Just be aware as you would in any major city and you'll be fine.

Sadly, yes, I predict death in your future.

    In mine too.

Maybe not in Mexico, maybe not tomorrow, next week, next year..

in light of that (if there is any) I'd suggest go down to Mexico and have a helluva good time.

    no pun intended.
