Trouble with new cab wiring...

A buddy of mine is trying to get his cab running with series wiring. It was working fine previously with parallel wiring.

Initial config: 2x12 running 2x16 ohm speakers in parallel for 8 ohms.
Desired config: 2x12 running 2x8 ohm speakers in series for 16 ohms.

He's having trouble with the new wiring.

He describes the sound as "wrong" - like an am radio or like a wah was running.

We've tried:
Running the speakers individually (works fine)
Running the new speakers in parallel (works fine)

Has anyone experienced anything like this? I think it's related to the new wiring, but not sure what to look at. It's not like it's a complicated circuit.

Do the battery test, both cones should move in the same direction, mislabled terminals?

Take a 9v battery and connect the battery + to the speaker + and the battery - to the speaker - and note which way the speaker cone moves. Repeat with the 2nd speaker. If both cones aren't moving in the same direction, they are out of phase and will sound hollow when used together...unless you reverse the wiring of either one to get them in phase.

They should be wired-tip of jack,to + terminal of first speaker,- of first speaker to + of second speaker, - of second speaker to sleave of jack.
