I've noticed on a few of my builds I've not been happy with tones on the onset of audible distortion. The common issue is a crackle with maybe similar qualities to blocking distortion.
I've attempted to combat unwanted distortion qualities with lowering grid leaks resistors, increasing grid resistors, and to mild success in the past paralleling plate resistors with low value caps.
A wiser me would buy a scope and track down this issue, but I'm checking for second opinions first.
