Troubleshooting edge of break-up

I've noticed on a few of my builds I've not been happy with tones on the onset of audible distortion. The common issue is a crackle with maybe similar qualities to blocking distortion.

I've attempted to combat unwanted distortion qualities with lowering grid leaks resistors, increasing grid resistors, and to mild success in the past paralleling plate resistors with low value caps.

A wiser me would buy a scope and track down this issue, but I'm checking for second opinions first.

5f-6 pre on one side and AC50 pre on the other. 6l6 fixed. Choke, 35-35-5 filtered supply.

I'd have to draw one to be exact.

If you want an explicit answer you need to be EXACT. There are at least a few components in question.

One thing I'd try would be to disconnect one preamp at a time and try it. Divide and conquer. It's all about the method, not about the final outcome.
