Turner Model 1 Featherweight

I find this guitar to be so different from anything I've experienced - and I've just begun to explore its tonal capabilities. But what I also find unusual (to me at least) is that the body is book-matched, presumably because of the way Turner makes his Featherweight model.

Do any other luthiers follow this approach?

I've also seen other Featherweights with cedar bodies where this wasn't done. But this one is uniformly matched on all sides of the body. Maybe it's just the luck of the draw.

Barr,

I don't have a scale, so this is a guess on my guitar based on using comparable weights. To me it seems to be 5 to 6 lbs.

Rick has an extremely nice (expensive) resaw that allows him to make very precise cuts. I would bet it was used to bookmatch your guitar..
I had Rick build me a Custom guitar a few years back.
He is quite a character :D

I love his self reference "I'm a tool maker". Any pics of your guitar?

Yes, but this model also has the piezo system and the ability to blend it with the pickup - pickup only to piezo only. And the pickup has the coil splitting feature. And then there is the parametric tone control with boost plus the passive tone control.

So with all these variables, it's tough for me to say how much rotating the pickup makes.

I've seen plain mahogany ones without the piezo in excellent condition sell used for $3500 and others with fancy quilted maple tops in mint condition fetching $4500. There's a guy here in Chicago selling one with the open headstock and the piezo system. All typically come with hardshell cases.

Distortion,

Holy crap!!!! That is amazing!!! Stunningly beautiful!! That looks like a one-piece top and that neck is gorgeous too. Extremely nice! Well done!

Yes it is a one piece top, and because Rick wanted to use it for the NAMM show he threw in a few extras to the mix.

This guitar actually has an exact twin. Marcus McQ and I went to Rick and ask to have two identical guitars built.
It was like seeing double. :D

Thanks for the complements, but yours is stunning as well.
Play it in good health...

Panama,
I'm sitting here playing one on trial right now. What pickup does yours have?

Jerrod,

Well I now own 2 Model 1s - I just received Distortion's Model 1 (above) yesterday. My first 1 is a 2004 with piezo and coil splitter and the 1 I bought from Distortion is a 2001 (non-featherweight) with piezo and coil splitter.

The 2004 has the black matte finish on the HB and the 2001 is gold plated. I have not pulled either of these apart to know more about the HBs.

And while I'm at it, I'm going to make a shameless plug for dealing with Distortion. Distortion is truly a wonderful guy to deal with. In addition to being honest, thoughtful, kind and generous, he knows how to ship a guitar – what a superb packing job! He also included what was left of the billet he had Rick build the guitar top from. It was a true pleasure to deal with him.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't seen a stock Turner pickup in black before, but that's what I assume you have. Enjoy the guitars.
