I recently posted a thread asking for recommendations regarding an overdrive pedal for my 5E3 because my current gigging situation doesn't allow for me to crank the amp as it's too loud. To quiet things down I switched from a Cannabis Rex to a Jensen P12Q. I got a few responses saying that the P12Q won't handle overdrive well and that the best bet is to install a new speaker. Today I had some free time so I decided to crank up the Tweed Deluxe and it reminded me of how much I love this amp turned up! Awesome natural overdrive. I took the others recommendations and decided to try a few speakers that I had lying around in order to see how each one responded and shaped the tone. I recorded clips of each so I could quickly switch between speakers and compare their tonalities. I originally did this without the intent of posting, but speakers are expensive and usually you cannot return them once installed so I decided to post this 'shootout' in hopes that it, too will help someone with a speaker search.

The speakers used are the following:

    EV12L
    Jensen P12Q
    Celestion 70/80
    Celestion Geenback

The signal chain is as follows:

CS Strat (Fat 50's) directly into 5E3.

    Instrument Input #1.

    Instrument Volume at 10.
    Mic Volume at 0.
    Tone at 12.

All speakers close mic'd with Sennheiser E906 1-inch off of grill cloth with half of the mic on the dust cap (left edge of mic directly down center of dust cap).

    Bridge pickup used exclusively.

For now I'm going to leave each clip unnamed to prevent any bias. Please vote if you have a preference and post your reactions! I will post the name of the speaker to the matching clip later. Also, I tried to do this more in a rock style than the usual blues I post from time to time.

EDIT: Results of Which Speaker Matches Which Clip Posted at the Bottom of Page #2!

I liked B and D. I liked the mids on both, D has a little more high end so I'd go with that one.
    Thanks!

    Riff Raff! (Close)

Haha yes, Riff Raff! Not an exact representation of it, but I just heard the song for the first time today and dug the riff so I decided to use it for the test!

I liked C for the clarity and less mids. I'm thinking C is the P12Q.

    I voted B. Though D was a close 2nd choice and I liked the agressiveness of C.

A sounds dull, my least favoite by far, guessing 70/80
B sounds sweetest to me, guessing Jensen p12q
C sounds the most agressive to me, guessing greenback
D seems to have the most punch, guessing evm12l.

Once through quick with an iPad, I liked A and C. I'd probably go with A as my favorite - I'm guessing that might change on better speakers.

I prefer C and D. C fits the amp and style, but D sounds great too.

I didn't like B. I could live with any of the rest. I didn't vote, though, because I don't really have a distinct preference. C's clarity, for example, could be good in some settings and with some guitars, off-putting with others.

The ke-rang at :24 seconds sold me on my decision.
If I were shopping, I might have picked something different for my application, but for the style of the clip, I feel good about the choice I made.
I accidentally looked at the poll results before listening and was surprised by my answer.

I've listened on good headphones twice. I find the results close, almost too close BUT I know from trying stuff that live in a room a P12Q and a Greenback G12M are way more different than you hear here.

    I think I'd pick C

    Neil

    What is that song?

I agree! The speakers definitely sounded much different in the room than this recording implies. Also, the feel was much different between them all. The song is a rough shot at riff raff by ac/dc. Not sure how close it is, I only heard the song once before looking up the riff and recording this demo!
