I know this has been beat to death and discussed but I changed the output tubes in the Opal I just recently got. It had a pair of Russian made winged =C= In but you never know how old they really are. The Studio Pro 50 I had had some short bottled Tad 6L6WGC STR's which I loved so I figured I would give em a try.
They are a wonderful tube. Very articulate, awesome bass response, and I feel a more shimmery, is that a word, top end then the C's. I can say for a fact the breakup in the OD is way better and much more sweeter and musical. I can't speak on a new pair of C's but the impression of the Tads are an overall improvement.

It's been said a million times here on TGP but Chad for Two Rock is just awesome and just another reason why TR is at the level they are. Last night when I pulled the chassis on my Opal which is a work of art and has ummmm 7 internal adjustment trimmers, I seen that and really had no idea what to do. Luckily my buddy is supper knowledgable thanks Jell Kelly and we figured it out but I called and left a message for Chad. He called me first thing this morning and we had a great conversation about my Opal he built #26 built on 3/4/02 and is signed in gold pen by Chad. And also talked about other TR's and builds and had some laughs. I'm done, you get the point, Two Rock Rocks...

I like both short and tall 6L6s in my Opal. In the past few years I've had quite a few old and new production tubes in play. Recently i've been using the small bottles in the last couple of years with the Jan Phillips or Tung Sol 5881/6L6WGB my favourite NOS tube. Warm and not too loud. The TADs are a very nice new production tube. I had the small bottle 6L6 in play and they sounded a lot like the RCAs as I recall.

Well @Cart Tone I hear ya on that and I guess Im kind of a rookie when it comes to Nos tubes. I did have RCA Blackplates in a custom Red Iron I had made but I never swapped tubes and couldnt compare how other tubes may have sounded. Are they really worth the money? Sorry Mike KCA... Would there be that much difference in tone that would be noticable for the money? or would I spend alittle money to make sure the Pre in V1 was Nos? I believe I have a Nos Sylvania 12ax7 in there now... Next time I actually call Mike and talk to him about something different atleast now I can use the Tads as a tone base.

17 years in the biz tells me that this is an unanswerable question. My stock answer is if 5 times the longevity isn't worth it to you then it might not be worth it. NO ONE can predict what your subjective reaction will be though many will pretend to me telepathic, not me though.

Looking at V1 is a good approach. Not sure if you'll like anything in there better than the Sylvania, but you might.
