Great question. Its asked over and over again.

Here are two clips. My personal favorite TwoRock (Low Gain Emerald Pro), against my Personal favorite Fuchs (SLX).

Same guitars, speakers mic, and even TRACK on the recorder. :dude

This is as about as close as a direct A\B test as you can get on the net I would think. Both amps sound FRIGGIN GREAT.

Top TwoClips here. PLEASE vote with your ears, and not on which brand you like or own. THANKS!

Which do you think sounds better in these clips?

A. Fuchs SLX

B. TwoRock Emerald Pro.

Tag,

You had the treble bleed set pretty high on the Fuchs. Smooth but a tad dark in comparison.

Both tones were very nice but I need to listen on my studio monitors and not these junky work speakers!!

On these horrid speakers, the Two Rock seemed to have a bit more presence at the risk of being a bit fizzy On the other hand the Fuchs had a nicer bottom but seemed a tad dark. The amps Eq Sections were set quite differently. Some pots are linear taper and some are audio taper.

Now if you could mix both qualities I dig.....

Try recording a Fuchs clip with the amp set a tad brighter.

Emerald Pro!

I think it is lower in volume then the Fuchs but you can definitely hear it has more low mids and is smoother and bigger sounding.

The Fuchs sounds great, but its tone is concentrated in a much narrower mid frequency band and is a bit more compressed.

FWIW the Fuchs sounds a lot more like Ford's tone to me in this clip. Actually the Fuchs sounds a lot like a Two Rock Custom to me.

I made my decision based on Scott's clip because it captured more of what I know to be the Fuch's SLX tone to the 't'.

No offense Tag... you're clips were very cool and the playing was great.

Using clips for comparison is very difficult and challenging because it all depends of the recording equipment used, speaker cab, mic placement, mic preamp, etc.

To be honest, I would have voted for the Two Rock had I not heard Scott's clip.

Tag,
You should make these kinds of polls a blind test. Dont divulge which amp is which and let folks make a choice....

Scott and Tag will sound good through any amp!

I voted for the amp that has been more consistant in tone that I personally have played through.

Both are good amps but, this is a bit of an unfair comparison, dont you think?

By the way were is the Bruno clip?

Right - adding another clip by another player means this comparison poll is now worthless....

If Tag used the same mic, speakers, preamp, recorder etc..., that's as close to A/B as you can get. Whether it is optimum for the amp or not is irrelevant - I highly doubt Tag would purposely try to skew this poll by purposely dialing one amp or the other to sound bad, so they are both dialed as well as they could be by the same player.

Since this thread is now shot, I might as well put up another low gain Emerald Pro clip to give a different perspective on what the amp is capable of;

Randy,

It is all about the tone. I was merely pointing out that Tag's clips, whether the Fuchs or the Two Rock, don't sound the way they should sound.

It is only fair that I posted since Tag holds his inexpensive mod out as an "SLX". It is a lowly mod. A fraction of the cost of most amps.

I know with total confidence that the production Fuchs that I have tweaked are bigger and more present than Tag's mod. The output iron in Tag's amp is 40 years old! His voltages are low. And, it is a steel chassis. All these factors add up. It is pretty amazing how I got that amp to sound with what I had to work with.

So, how was Fig's tone? Amazing it is the same amp... (same mod platform, same 1964 iron) no???

I like the Fuchs SLX.

After listening to all of the clips on the page, I like the way TR sounds in the midrange on "Unchained", but it sounds a little too flubby in the bass end to really pull off a good hard rock tone.

...and the E-Pro is a 5 year old design. Certainly not the Cadillac of the TR line these days. I thought this thread was about Tag's comparison clip between his E-Pro and his Fuchs SLX mod - no?

The other clip sounded great - different player, mic, preamp, speaker, cabinet, guitar, recording platform etc.... no longer a valid comparison to Tag's E-Pro clip, and hardly fair to base a poll on it.

Thanks Randy that was really nice.
Great tone! My personal fav for my ear and pick attack.

You know tone is subjective to the player.

I suggest to play an amp for yourself through the same cab and guitar with all controls at 12:00 for a good A/B.

Listen to the pure tone of the amp first.

Then proceed to change the tone controls to your liking with each amp.
Then A/B them.
What ever amp is more you, is the right choice.

Forget about names and tubes and hype and just listen to wich amp is an extension of your playing style.

The E-Pro does rock tones very well and can be dialed to sound pretty Marshallish, although it's thicker and smoother - here's another old clip;

I agree. It was with the SAME player, SAME guitar, SAME recorder, and SAME track! Thats why I did it that way. The question was WHICH SOUNDS BETTER IN THIS CLIP. Now its all ****ed up. :(

Ill have to do another blind one in the future like Richard B said.

Scott,
I like my 40 year old trannies. That is part of the magical feel of this amp. I also know you said you have modded your production 30 further, but I liked my Mod a LOT more than the production 30 when you had it here. The low voltages give it a warmer and softer feel, and an overall smoothness. On these clips, I prefer mine to Figs. Thats just a different setting, with no where near the sustain as in my clips. He also probably had the treble trim down lower. Mine was about mid point.

As is, I like my Fuchs more than the E.Pro OR tan Dumble! If I get a Fuchs TODS, I would want it built with trannies similar to the ones in my amp. Its ALL about the feel for me! Listen to the tone in my clips, its SICK!! :dude The gain is not even 1\2 way up, and its SCREAMING.

Tag, stop it with the 30 watter talk! Give me the benefit of the doubt, would you? THat amp kills now. I retubed it, changed tranny, tweaked a bunch, etc... It has a clean bill of health now....

This morning I listened to both sets of clips on my expensive monitors. They both sounded great! The Fuchs was not as dark as the cheap work monitors made it sound! I take back yesterdays comments....

;)

Oh, I posted that other clip not in an effort to sway voting, but to merely post another clip of an identical mod that I did. Both amps were at my house at the exact same time, side by side. Both amps were shipped out on the same day too!!! They are brothers or sisters.... Or what have you... LOL
