Okay.....Don't get me wrong, I have much respect for Robben Ford, and Larry Carlton. Superb guitar players. Love 'em. Seen them.

But Dumble OD tone? Pleasant, safe, easy on the ear, smarmy, sophisticated........smoove........as in elevator muzak.

It's too damned polite sounding. If you will, it's the antithesis of the philosophy which drove whomever to apply screwdriver to speaker cones to create a ragged nasty sound designed to irritate adults.

The point of overdrive, last I checked, was to get in peoples faces.

Dumble tone to my ears is like listening to Kenny-G. Safe, saccharine sweet, courteous.

Give me raunchy, nasty, fuzzed out, obnoxious distorted tones over that any day of the week.

    Hardy-har-har-har!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, lets see more of that loud, distorted, in your face, fuzz so it can cover up all that bad technique, eliminate expressive touch, and just over all bad playing!!
    I'm with ya, brother!!

Two rock is a much different beast........I dig them, although I think after they're really warm they are not so dynamic anymore.....The ones I've played that is.....Emerald Pros I think.........

You've played the Fuchs stuff, right Ralph?? So you know they don't have to be polite, if you don't want that ...

I've never had the pleasure of playing a Fuchs........

In general thought I am of the opinion that 6L6's ain't the right bottle for OD. (Well a long time ago I played a mahvelous MkII that was outrageous for single note stuff.............)

I diggeth the EL34 thing for OD.

    +1

Gotta admit the Carlton/Ford thing doesn't do it for me either but I'd still like to try a Dumble one day because of what I've heard from Lindley, Lowell George, Rick Vito etc..

well i guess its all a preference thing.
Im not really into the carlton or the robben ford tone.
Ive kinda tuned mine to act like a blackface on the clean channel and a bad ass hotrodded plexi on the dirt channel.

I do have to say that i think john mayers tone on the trio album TRY! is very good, very brash sounding at times. I think the leads are the Dumble ODS and the cleans are the Two Rocks.
