Joey Vera from Armored Saint/Fates Warning, never see him mentioned and he's amazing. Tim "Grabber" Hansen (RIP) from Mercyful Fate was great as well.

Jim Barr is one of my favorites. His work with Portishead and Get the Blessing is great.

I always loved Mike Mills from REM basslines. They're not mixed super loud but if you pay attention they're great.

Any bassist that is able to simultaneously hold down the groove AND hold back in order to support the lead instruments is almost by design underrated.

Conversely, if a bassist is known by name, they might not be underrated. :D

I'm pretty sure "not often getting the respect you deserve" is part of the job description for all bassists.

Search Youtube and one can find bassists who seem to be able to play anything and everything on bass.
    They are largely unknown.
Bass as a solo instrument remains a niche market.
If you are in a band, get an equitable cut, and would be wanted by another band another band, your rating is 'good.'

I make no claim to being knowledgeable here, but for my money Eric Czar has to at least be on the list.

    Sorry, Stanley Clarke.

In my defense, it was early and I hadn't had my coffee yet.

Colin Greenwood of Radiohead has always had such memorable grooves that often served as main hooks of their songs. My bass writing/arranging has been really influenced by Colin over the years, not to mention I'm a huge fan of his tone.

Bob Daisley has GREAT bass parts and arranging sense.

Geezer is well respected but obviously doesn't get as much praise as Iommi.
