Emi is being acquired by universal for $2billion. This makes universal the owner of publishing rights for 40% of all music in the USA and Europe. Not just current hits, all recordings in human history. It goes without saying that universal had no part in producing most of this music (they acquired it).
I watched as a radio consolidated into Clear Channel and then become irrelevant. Radio today is completely disconnected from music. I wonder what will happen with record companies as reality shows And Internet distribution become more prevalent. Five years ago I would've freaked out at this merger. Today I feel it's actually an opportunity because it narrows the field for who you need to worry about as a musician. You either signs of universal or stay independent. That's an easy equation. There's always a chance that universal figure out how to become useful and valid again and musicians and artists careers rather than simply feeding their own machine.
