If you had to choose between a Gibson SG Standard and a Gibson Flying V Standard, which would you take and why?

I would take the SG for the simple functionality of it. They are both great, light guitars with good upper fret access, but the SG can be played sitting, standing or which ever way you want to go at it (with in reason of course)

I say "V"

Lots more SG's out there and sometimes it's neat having a guitar that's a little more unique.

Plus don't they make an attachment so you can sit with it? (like the Steinbergers do)

I have owned at least five Flying Vs and cannot bond with the body shape.

I'd take the SG.

V - love the feel, shape and attitude. Haven't bonded with any SG I've ever picked up.

Yes, you CAN sit with a V.

But I have one already, so I'd take an SG.

Blank slate, my preference is a '58 style V, love the look, other V's don't do it for me looks-wise.

FWIW - take the pickups into account as well. The V has really hot ceramic humbuckers while the SG has more flavors - (P90 Classic, 490 or '57 humbuckers, all the way up to hotter pickups).

Mostly, I'd advise taking a trip to a store and playing a bunch.

Having said that, I have two SG's - I really think they're the best, but that's me. : )

I would choose an SG standard over a Flying V.

As an owner of two V's so far, I say pick the SG, unless you can truly commit to the V body shape. Otherwise, it probably will not get enough playing time to justify the purchase.

I have both! Okay, enough boasting...even though the V was my first love, I would have to keep the SG if forced to choose (more versatile for me).

I have a V and an SG and the V gets five times the playing time that I spend on the SG. No problem playing it sitting down classical style.

I have a V, and I would totally prefer an SG. V's dont have the greatest pickups.
My V came with the Duncan '59/JB combination.

Frankly, I'd rather have a korina V than two SGs. The SG has a weak neck joint, weak headstock/neck and they are notorious for tuning instability. The only reason I bought one is for when my friends ask to play one of my good guitars I offer them the SG.
