We're planning on staying at a resort in Cancun.
Once people heard that we were going I heard all about the drug cartels and violence in Mexico, including in the resorts. The resort said that the news is hyped up by the media.
Have you any experience positive or negative with vacationing in Mexico in general and Cancun specifically?

They'll cut off your head and serve it at the breakfast buffet.

Or at least that's what I've heard.

But maybe that's just media hype. I dunno...:dunno

I was there in September. I was gunned down five times.

    Enjoy your trip!

My experience is several years old. If you stay in an all-inclusive, you'll be fine. Ditto doing things in groups, using transportation that you have some basis for confidence in, and so forth. Getting off on your own, especially in remote areas, seems to be the biggest problem area. I enjoyed both my stays in Mexico, but honestly there's nothing there that is so attractive that I would go back; it's a big world, plenty of alternatives.

Note that I travel with my family, so my risk tolerance is pretty low.

I think you are safer in Cancun than you are in Chicago, LA or NYC.

    Enjoy your trip.

Leave your kidneys at home. They're guaranteed to get stolen before you even leave the airport.

Day time no problem. I would try to avoid any non local excursions many vacation spots, not just Mexico, at night. My Step daughter just moved from Playa Del Carmen (south of Cancun) after living there for 3+ years. No problem. I have witnessed petty crime in Mexico a couple times and my sample is small, so just be savvy, avoid wearing a diamond necklace etc! The Yucatan feels safer than many of the other mainland spots to me.
Cancun is pretty much the "Waikiki Beach" of Mexico though.

Seriously, it can be pretty brutal. We spent time in the areas of town only the locals go to. Don't click the spoiler unless you're ready to see a row of corpses all lined up.

I was there a couple years ago for a buddy's wedding (his family is from that area). Totally loved it, and it felt safe day and night. We did a lot of walking around in the evenings, but it was mostly the touristy public areas.

I would say more the Myrtle Beach or Panama City Beach of Mexico.

And to the OP, do a search for threads in The Pub on visiting Mexico, the subject has been done to death, joke intended.

If you can make it to Chichen Itza it is totally worth the time & money. Especially if you saw Apocalypto. Yes, it's safe. There are also local day experiences like Xcaret (if it hasn't changed its name). The Scuba is good, too, and you can go even if not certified on a "resort dive."

It's a tourist trap and it's biggest customer are US citizens. They keep the place safe since it makes a lot of money and you can even drink the water.

If you are on a resort in Cancun, it is very safe. Even leaving the resort is pretty much OK but if you want to be ultra safe just go tour during the day as nothing good ever happens after midnight. Went there many times. Both Cancun and the Mayan.

Yes. I’d be more nervous waking down the wrong street in Chicago, Detroit, or New York

Don't drink the alcohol at the all inclusives, I hear.

    http://mexicovacationawareness.com/

A friend of a friend and his wife had a black out experience in an all inclusive not too long ago. Nothing happened to them other than scaring their kids due to being missing/passed out, but others haven't been so lucky it seems.

Personally, I've vacationed in Mexico (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel) off and on from 1989 to 2007 and it was all good times for me. I haven't been back recently though.

I'd recommend Cozumel over Cancun, btw.

Great place if you are 23, super fit, and all you want to do is go to an endless, loud, drunken, drug fueled dance party on the beach, trying to get laid in a crowd full of young men trying to pose as bad asses.

We have visited Mexico regularly since the early 1990s and have owned a timeshare in Cabo for 5 years. My advice? Don't be a dick or a dumbass and you'll be perfectly safe.
