I like the illuminated fret markers.

I see a couple of Legacy heads in the background, is he using the AXFX just for effects?

    Yup, AxeFX for effects only.

He's been using one for years. Whats funny is he still has an old GForce plugged in the loop too. I swear, sometimes I think he'll just use anyones gear if they give it to him for free.

Exactly. I don't think AxeFx is not capable of producing something, that Gforce can. Figures he likes one unit here, the other - there, etc.

Also, GForce has never been a "poor man's" fx processor; probably sounds good enough to compete with the fractal.

The G-Force is an awesome sounding processor. No shame in using it with an Axe-FX!

Really? He's been using a lot of the same gear for quite a while. Heck, he still uses the original Legacy heads. And he's been a G-Force very long time. He's had an Axe-FX in his rig for a while now as well.

I haven't really listened to him closely since his 3rd album, but I always assuming he used his Gravity Storm pickups on the song Gravity Storm? Anyone know what pickups he has in that guitar?

I'll forever associate Vai with the good ol' Eventide H3000. I wonder if he still uses one?

Watched the Live in L.A. version. Vai is still amazing.
Unexpected highlight - the electric Harp player rocking out in the background.
Lowpoint - Vai's pelvic thrusts in camera

Something else interesting about that picture. Looks like he's using a Dimarzio strap but the part that screws into the guitar does not look standard and I can't find anything similar on their web site. Any ideas what he's using?

On the Gravity Storm pickups. I have a pair in my Ibanez and they're incredible. The neck pickup especially.

    Good one! :rotflmao

I assume he's using it for anything he wants. Sometimes a piece of gear works right with a given song or songs. Whether it's for effects or more I just enjoyed seeing the Axe II being used by a touring pro like Vai. If it's in his rack that says to me that it holds up to use on the road, far more wear and tear than I'm ever likely to put mine through.

I loved the Passion & Warfare album, haven't listened to much of his work since but great respect and props for what he's accomplished.

He has been using the AxeFX for a few years now at least. The Gforce must do something the AXE can't. It was out of his rig for a while at least.

Live no, but he has several different Eventide processors in his studio
