Ok so I am in the UK and have heard good things about both cables. I need 13 metres for 2 cables plus 10 patch - Van Damme Classic is £1.15 per metre and sommer is £2.50 per metre.

Is sommer worth paying that much more for?

(I already have some neutrik plugs which I am going to use)

    Cheers

I've always had excellent results with Van Damme cable. Ive got a few Sommers and they sound very similar to my ears - nothing significant to note.

    +1

i've got a load of cleartone and kabl cables made with van damme

picked up a sommer the spirit XXL on thomann just for a laugh to see what it was like- very nice, but pretty similar to the van damme stuff i think.

EDIT: klotz cable might be worth a look too

Dealt with Pro Audio Shop a number of times - no problems with them. Since Maplin stopped selling Van Damme, they've been my go-to seller for Van Damme cables.

Haven't tried the XXL, just the usual stuff, personally.

Hey there, I thought this might help you.

    It's a comparison between 3 cables.

The Cordial CGK 175 is very similar (spec wise) to the XXL:

    CGK 175 cap m1 88 pF
    XXL cap m1 86 pF
    Both have 1 x 0,75 mm2 42 x 0,15 mm conductors.

See for yourself if you can hear the difference between between a €1,90 XXL or €7,80 GrindyCop
The Wrapper is probably very similar to the VD Classic.

i haven't actually tried it in ages :rotflmaoFrom what I can remember it was in the ballpark... not noticeably better, not noticeably worse.

i'd really need to plug it straight into the amp to give it a really fair test, though.

i just buy my cables ready-made, so i can't help you with where to get just the cable :)

    Get this:
    http://www.thomann.de/de/sommer_cable_the_spirit_xxl_instr_200.htm

20m of Spirit XXL + 2 ends already soldered with good Hicon plugs.

It's much cheaper than cable itself :aok

Thanks for the tip! I was planning on buying plugs and Spirit XXL cable, so this will be a lot cheaper. How is it possible that this is cheaper than buying the cable per meter?

Do You think they pay they meter-wise price for the Spirit XXL? ;)

This cable is the "secret deal" and who knows how log will it last.
Buy while it's still there :)

How did you get on? buy the VDs?

I just tried out the VD cable, before that i have used Fulltone, Planet Waves, Lava Soar and Core X2 cable.

I really like the VD cable, it gets me closer to that sound in my head, it seems to control the sound better, is very evenly balanced, but also allows through a nice lower mids - subjectively - in my rig. Its not as 'bright' as the Fulltone, Soar or X2, but its cleaner, lack of etched high end. It seems to suit my playing and gives the dynamics that are just right for me, not too boisterous.

At times i feel i need a bit more presence in the highs, but then i am using an Orange (none-more-warm) TT combo.

I would happily use Van Damme to wire my entire rig and board with this cable, its cheap but its performance to price ratio is very good indeed.
