Clearly! Still blowing minds, 40 years later.

Yeah, that is why I was thinking that. I was in awe and I've been listening to VH for decades now, must have been crazy to be exposed to that back in 78.

For sure. It blows my mind that that band was popular. Their music was really bad, makes the worst modern pop music sound great.

Why post this? Why even enter this thread and troll if you feel this way?

When a band leaves a lasting impression on millions of people and is still being talked about in both positive and negative terms 40 years later, it's usually because they did something different, something no one else was doing at the time, they were unusual in some way. Love 'em or hate 'em, I'd say VH qualifies and your post just underscores my assertion.

Eddie tweeted some photos of his 1978 touring rig on display in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Play It Loud" Instruments of Rock & Roll exhibit.

I was there in August and saw this rig. Quite impressive...especially the bomb to the right of the cabs.

I'll bet it didn't take Eddie long to break in those speakers. :D

thanks for sharing. THIS is the band that captured my imagination at 10 years old and was such a large part of my teen years. Ed sounds just like the record IMO.

I think he sounds better than the record; a bit more free and loose, almost like Ted was telling him to reign it in.
The early boots I have, he’s playing with a bit more fire (like this) than what’s on the record.
Not a lot, just a bit.

I was at this show...I had really, really, really wanted to go to the '78 Selland show, but no way in hell (pun intended) was Mom gonna let me go see a band named Black Sabbath. The reports at my high school the next day were unanimous: Van Halen blew Sabbath outta the building.

Ed killed it in '79 too...and DLR was somethin' else. Truly one of the best front men ever.

Eddie's tone was fantastic here, just legendary. Too bad it all went to hell when he dropped the red paint on that guitar.

Can you imagine being one of the “big names” back in the day (Nugent, Perry, et al) playing all those big summer festivals, hearing Ed for the first time and realizing you have to follow that?!??
