We have always encouraged businesses to have an active presence on TGP; but in the past, the rules about it have created some confusion and issues for businesses and members alike. Walking the line between what was considered spamming and what businesses wanted to communicate was sometimes clouded and at the minimum confusing for business and members in general.

We are announcing a new policy that will hopefully simplify and ease the tension for every member of The Gear Page. The rules for businesses have been updated. We are focused on member experience here on the page and the goal here makes it easier for vendors to participate without all the barriers and confusion while at the same time allowing members to easily seek out or ignore threads that are promotional in nature.

Following are the updated portion of the rules. The only change to any and all of the rules of conduct here on TGP are to, "Rules for Businesses".

    ...
    Rules for Businesses.
    1. Supporting Vendor – Annual or Monthly
      • To Participate and Sell and Market as a commercial business on The Gear Page, you must become a Supporting Vendor. This level of supporting membership comes with permission to post commercial listings in our emporiums, list links in your signature and open a Vendor tagged thread in the Member Discussion areas.
        • Vendor Banner
          • A vendor supporting member banner lets our members and moderators know you are a vendor
        • Signature, Avatar, Profile
        • We require placing a disclosure and suggest a link and contact information in your signature. Avatar suggestions can be logos, products, or musician lifestyle images. To edit your profile information, when logged in, click your username on the top right of the screen and you will see links to update your avatar, signature, and profile.
        • Suggested Content
          • Using the “Vendor” thread prefix you may create and maintain one promotional thread in one relevant discussion forum at any given time. When that thread loses activity, you may post new content but not more than once every 24 hours. In this one thread you may post the following:
          • You may post Videos/Pictures that feature your products
            • You may post Event announcements, trade shows, seminars, etc.
            • You may New product announcements
          • You may use the “Vendor” thread prefix to maintain one promotional sales thread in the relevant Emporium (Classifieds) forum at a time. The Commercial Areas of the Emporiums are wide open - you can post as many threads as you would like there.
        • Some Things Not To Do
          • Comparing products to the competition
          • Bumping your thread with a new post(s) in the Discussion areas beyond once every 24 hours unless you are answering a direct question. Some leeway is given but consistent abuse will be noted, and posting privileges could be in danger
          • Double posting the same announcement in different sections of the site
          • Posting to other sponsors' threads (unless you have something nice to say)
        • Issues/questions
          1. Don't hesitate to contact us
          2. If you see inappropriate content, the fastest way to bring to our attention is to click the "report post" button. The moderators get an email of the report immediately.
    ...

That will be fine for the majority of businesses and vendors on the forum. There are however a number of small private businesses that buy and sell gear as a hobby. The question about how to decide who is a business and who is not will be guided in the spirit of the rules with the following guidelines from our perspective.

Guidelines for determining who is a business:
    1. One who Sells and or Reps for any Retail organization.
    2. One who Sells and Reps for any Builders, large or small.
    3. One who consistently lists and sells more than 5 Guitars or Amps each month, (repeat ads of the same items that don't sell due to price or lack of demand won't count).
    4. One who consistently lists and/or sells more than 10 pedals a month.
    5. Anyone that has a Storefront presence on sites like Reverb or eBay who are found to be selling as a "business" as it applies to points 1 through 4 and is selling an abbreviated amount of the same items in the Emporium.
Businesses and retailers that currently have supporting memberships will be transferred upon request to Vendor Supporting Member for the pro-rated term of their supporting membership to be in compliance with the rules. Contact me via email or private message/conversation here on the board to implement that. Questions and comments can and should be directed to me.

I will be subscribing to this thread and updating the OP if there are any changes deemed necessary.

Do you have to be a "Supporting Vendor" to post threads related to your business in the Builder's and Retailer's Forum only?

    Scott,

You and the other moderators are nothing short of heroes for keeping TGP alive and growing for all of these years. Every little change in the rules seems to be an advancement and is one of the reasons why TGP stays strong. Thank you all!

In the blue bar at the top you'll see "Supporting Membership". Click that and scroll down to the bottom.

    Scott,

If someone does not work or rep for a particular business, this may seem like a silly question. Is recommending a business product or service still permissible by linking a URL or YT video, for example?

Thanks, Scott, and to all the admins and mods. It can't be easy herding us cats and fighting the general downward spiral of the internet.

Thank you for making TGP a builder-friendly place. It's amazing how many other forums are not.

How do you suggest using the "Vendor" prefix, like this? [Vendor] BC Audio announces new amp

I don't see any such posts in the Amp and Cabs forum, and I don't want to do it wrong. (I also don't want to come across as spamming, so maybe I'll just leave it in the Builders & Retailers Forum.)

I like this. Having a Supporting Vendor banner is going to make it consistently easy to spot company owner/rep posts. Will they get their own color?

$250/year as a business expense and marketing investment? Peanuts.

    Thank You,

What you've done here is enforce a sense of community into how we go about buying/selling on the emporium.

    Three cheers!

What about people that are obsessive pedal collectors or just own a lot? Rules now say you are a “vendor” or “business” if you sell more than 10 pedals a month. There’s members here that post all of the pedals they have for sale, many times over 10,in one post. Now all of a sudden they have to identify as an established business? How is that fair?
