Hi,

Where do I get one of these? I know the dealers are listed on the web but thought I'd ask where you guys are actually getting yours?

Also, how does it compare to Marshell Class 5?

Thanks!

Well... not having had the pleasure of plugging into a VHT S6, I can only make this observation, based on what I've read about them: the S6 is handwired on a turret board; much easier to mod than the PCB based C5.

Tone wise? Sorry, can't comment on that...

I bought mine through Amazon. I have the combo. The stock 10" speaker is voiced nice and warm. You can get a woody jazz tone all the way to a very sweet Deluxe like overdrive with a mild preamp like an ECC81 or 5751. Put a normal gain 12ax7 in and it has way more crunch than a Class 5. Fun! For power tubes ive been liking different shades of 6V6's. The stock one compresses easily for a good bluesy vibe while a JJ has more clarity.
The cabinet is small so Im making a finger-jointed Walnut cab. for it in 2x10 configuration. I'm using the stock speaker and some vintage Fender voiced Weber.

It's an inexpensive amp but the build quality on the handwiring is very nice. But most of all it has tone.

Can this amp use different power amp tubes? If so, which ones?

Yes.

6V6
6L6
EL34
KT66
6550
KT77
KT88

I've only been able to get 6V6's and short bottle 6L6's to fit in the combo (the speaker is kinda in the way), but I've heard that there's plenty of room in the head version.

The amp designer also cautioned using some of the bigger tubes for really long durations... you may want to read the article/interview which can be found here:

http://www.frugalguitarist.com/Frugal.aspx?Issue=19&Page=Terry%20Buddingh%20Interview

"Beware that larger tubes can stress the power transformer’s heater winding current capability, so if you really like the sound with a EL34, 6550 or KT88, turn it off and let it cool down every hour or two."
