    Viking Rats sample mix

Here is a sample clip from my upcoming album, West ZooOpolis, with German drummer Wunderkind, Marco Minnemann. The album is through-composed over a 52-minute drum solo Marco performed in Germany before moving to the US last year. 5-6 composers, Trey Gunn, Mike Keneally, Alex Machacek, Phi Yaan-Zek, Marco and myself are each writing a different version over the entire solo to be released late 2008.

This piece, Viking Rats, occurs at 22:55 into his drum solo. It is the only real metal type tune on the album. The head Teutonic Rat-catcher himself, Ed DeGenaro, takes a fretless solo at the end of this one!

John I recall when you started this project and I must say you've risen to the challenge.

Looking forward to hearing the whole thing.

John, I had a blast contributing to this, and love what you did with the delay. Also the your solo and the bass solo rock farkin hard!

Thanks for giving this rough mix a listen. Right now, I have the whole 52 minutes in one big PT session with all tracks open, so the system resources are maxed on an HD2 rig. I look forward to when all the composing and tracking is done so I can separate all the different sections into individual PT files - deactivating the tracks I'm not using to get more fire power for EQ and stuff. This has virtually no section-specific EQ. It's just EQ by volume automation.:)

Thanks again, Ed. It is really fun to labor over this stuff for countless hours and then have a Jedi Knight like yourself come in and breath a whole bunch of new life and energy into it. Glad you like Kevin's solo too! He got his baptism by fire touring with Planet X a few years back when he was 21, but he's a total bad-ass in so many styles. Kevin's been a huge asset to help solidify the feel of the the whole album given the hyperactivity and shape-shifting that goes on trying to compose over a continuous drum solo that moves in and out of so many styles.

Yeah Anton, if Ed were a Commando, he would be diving out of the aircraft butt naked, donning his parachute in the air with his knife in his teeth...:worried

great playing and groove John and Ed!

John, by the way, just did a "free improv" recording session with Harley, what a great player. You got to get the Watermelon rolling again!

Well, to my horror, it has been brought to my attention that the solo bed version of Viking Rats I posted has one little problem…I forgot to mute my melodic guitar section prior to Ed’s solo. Duh…to many hours in front of the Tools done fried my brain. Sorry about that! Also, sorry for the out of tune rhythm guitar. Same excuse…

So, here is the more extended version for guys to have some fun!

    Thanks guys,

Hey Jamon, lucky you! Yeah, Harley is a super cool. We do have a gig coming up at a festival in March, so time get shedding again...

Aw come on Ed! You know that image could get MUCH uglier if we just toss in some rock and roll culture accouterments! Fearless is thy name...Ed Degenaro, the Evil Knievel of fretless guitar!
