    Hi Guys,

Was hoping someone could help me out. I’m thinking about checking out a 1958 Gretsch 6121 that is local to me but the pickups look awful close together. Is this standard for the model? Can’t seem to find too much on originals. Thanks.

Yeah...the pickups on those got moved closer together when they switched from dynasonics to filtertrons, but not usually THIS close. That's crazy.

But it certainly does look like it came that way from the factory...

And 6121s usually had Chet's signature on the pickguard...could this be a custom order? Like maybe somebody wanted a 6121 without any of the "western" appointments...basically a Duo Jet in the color of the 6121...

So apparently according to the experts at the gretsch forums this pick up spacing is referred to as project o sonic and were intended for stereo guitars. They didn’t sell that well and they used the bodies for 6121s and some penguins. Not common but factory.

Hmmmm? interesting I noticed that on a 58 Country Club a few years ago, the guy was selling it cheap and he said the same thing "Project-0-Sonic" it had strange wiring too.. No one wanted it.. I think the guy still has the guitar.. Good to know thanks, Robby...

Correct. Project-o-sonic. It’s a great guitar, but looks ackward with the spacing. There is no good way to correct the spacing, so it is what it is....
