Hey Guys!,.. just put a deposit on a Hiwatt 4x12 cab at a local music store. Have not seen it in person yet, only a picture. They couldn't tell me a lot about it (of course!!, large chain music store! LOL!)
They said it was from the `80's or maybe `70's and couldn't tell me what was in it for speakers.
My question is!, How do you tell a vintage Hiwatt 4x12 from a newer reissue that appears vintage as well?
Anything to look for?, what speakers were in the Hiwatt `70's and `80's 4x12 cabs?
This one is $300., sounds like it might be worth it if it's `70's or `80's What's your guys opinions?
    Thanks for any info.!:AOK

hiwatt used Fane speakers in the old days. not so now.
look for a date code on the rear of the cabinet, and I believe they have a different model # now.
if it has fanes and is 300 bucks, buy it and either keep it or resell it to me.

hardee har har for that happening.......

What he said. Check for Fanes. If it's an early 80's amp it will be a Biacrown. 70's, well a lot happened to Hiwatt in the 70's, most of it great....

Here is a info from a site about HIWATT cab info:

    SE4121 - Speaker Enclosure 4x12 version 1
    - 22w Fane drivers #122141, 14,000 gauss.
    - 16ohm 150 watt rating.
    - short lived as the 22w drivers could not handle the power of DR103's

    SE4122 - Speaker Enclosure 4x12 version 2
    - 50w Fane drivers #122142, 17,000 gauss
    - 16ohm 150 watt rating

    SE4123 - Speaker Enclosure 4x12 version 3
    - 50w Fane drivers #122231, 14,000 gauss
    - 16ohm 100 watt rating

If it is made by Hylight Electronics then it is a real HIWATT. Serial # up to approx. #8100 were rear loaded. after that front loaded.

Biacrown cabs #9000 and higher these mostly used Fanes, but some celestions as well.

I had heard they had Fane speakers but weren't sure how long they were loaded with them. Is Biacrown a speaker brand? Never heard of it before, are they any good?

Biacrown is the name of the company that followed Hylight Electronics. Headed by three former employees who in coordination with the attorney that handled the estate, swindled Dave Reeves' widow and children out of the HIWATT name after his untimely death in 1981.
