I´m eying several doublecut MM´s (no SC here right now in Europe, can´t see one at least:() - these are 1961, 62, 63..
From what I could find - there should be no major change during these years ?
Most importantly - does the neck thickness differ (getting flatter later on perhaps?)
    Thanks, Tom

'61s and early '62s have the wraparound set at the steeper angle like 1950's guitars. Later in 1962 they straightened out the studs and changed over to the compensated (lightning bar) tailpiece.

I had an early 1962 and the neck thickness was .799" [20.29mm] at the first fret. For comparison, I have a 1959 singlecut that measures .876" [22.25mm], a 1960 at .883" [22.43mm], and another 1960 at .886" [22.50mm]. I've never owned a 1963 but I did play one and its neck felt similar to my 1962.

Are you set on a doublecut? In my opinion, the singlecuts are the MM to have. I've owned three and the necks are perfect. With a pickup upgrade, they are the poor man's Junior. Jason Lollar makes a P-90 pickup that will fit a Melody Maker without any routing. I installed one into my 1959 SC and its killer. His pickup comes without a cover, but I wanted a cleaner look for mine so added a black P-90 cover to mine. I actually prefer to play this guitar over my '55 and '57 Juniors. The tone is comparable, it has a perfect '59 profile neck, access to the upper part of the neck is better than the Junior's due to the thinner body, its lighter in weight, and its cheap (less risk to gig with).

Thanks - what a wealth of info, I appreciate it a lot !

Well, I´d prefer a single cut myself too, no doubt - but as I wrote, there aren´t any available right now over here ... guess I´d wait until some appears.
