What year did Fender switch from bakelite to molded plastic?
What about aged stuff other than the really expensive stuff like Fatboy.....any suggestions for a project I am working on?

Fender transitioned from bakelite (polystyrene) to plastic (ABS) p/u covers, knobs and switch tip approximately in the spring of 1957. I`ve seen `57 strats with a mix of bakelite and plastic during the transition time. Hope this helps.:D

Formvar's right, "bakelite" is a misnomer, but everybody uses that term.

Kinda like calling switch positions 2 and 4 on a Strat "out of phase".

The pickguards were single layer white PVC from '54 to early '59 (the earliest '54 guards were shiny on top and matte on the bottom), then "greenish" 3-ply nitrate to late '64, some early '65. Then white 3-ply PVC. Somewhere around maybe '67 to '70 Fender used the pearloid material they used on Mustangs and simply flipped it around. Those guards are pearloid un the underside, white on top.

SPAM: I have a supposedly NOS nitrate material "Fatboy" guard I bought here in the Emporium. Seller told me it was the last one to be had. It's for sale, PM me.
