So, I saw a really cool video of Dweezil Zappa using just the AxeFX to create faux cello/violin sounds. However, there was no info about HOW he programmed the Axe to do it!

Now that I've got the Amplifire, I have discovered how I can use acoustic body IRs to get great faux acoustic sounds with my electric. Here's my question: anyone know HOW the faux cello sound was created on the Axe, and do you think I could do that on the Amplifire using a cello/violin IR?

I know the short answer is "download an IR and see" but I figure it couldn't be that easy....seems like you'd need some kind of envelope filter or some way besides just an IR to get that "bowing effect".

    Thoughts?

The Axe Ultra and up also include 2 synth blocks, so I'd "guess" Zappa was using the synth block with acoustic body IR's.

Almost certainly using some synth functions. However, one of the basic ways to emulate strings is to use a swell effect to remove the hard attack of the initial picking. Similar to strumming a chord with the volume pedal on 0 and then rolling it open to increase the volume.

I'm not sure what the Amplifire can do in that regard but I'd certainly be interested in hearing it.

I'll find some cello or violin IRs and see what I can do. If I come up with anything of worth, I'll post back here!

Well, no synth block on the Amplifire, but, I'll see what I can do...

Dweezil posted this comment on that video on YT.

"The tracking is normal. It's not a synthesizer and it's not triggering samples. It's envelope filter and eq based. It is very sensitive to dynamic range as far as picking goes. It takes some time to get used to it."

It does sound really nice. Would love to have a sound like that.

One of the things that the AxeFx does very well is allow you to assign modifiers to various parameters. For example, when you assign an Envelope or ADSR as the modifier controller of an Input Level or Volume control parameter, you can control the characteristics of the attack portion of your sound - everything from a slight softening to fully chopping the input attack to create a "swell"...and anything in between. I believe it is something like this which DZ refers to, in conjunction with an IR taken at the sound hole of an acoustic instrument like a violin or aku guitar.

I have a version of the violin preset that was posted to the Fractal forum.

I haven't tried to load it in several firmware versions though.

Using my GT10 for eff with the Amplifire, I can get this using their 'Slow Gear' effect. It's an auto swell, obviously I guess....

OP; isn't there a slow gear equivalent in the atomic? Maybe a combination of that and the Violin IR?
