Do humbuckers have to be overwound to be darker toned or less bitey?
What exactly or the theories involved attribute to a pickups tones? I'm speaking along the lines of more traditional PAF types in general.
What about magnet choices per frequencies they enhance, etc?

I ask, I have a LP that I think is just a great guitar, but bright in general. I have Dr. V's in it now and it is too bright for me. Don't get me wrong, sounds good, but I'd prefer less highs and more low mids. Heck my Strat with overwound (Rios) tends to be woolier and bassier.

Problem is, I don't really want dirty pickups, I love being able to roll off the volume and it clean up failry well.

Am I missing something simple here?

What caps are darker? It has those older RS ones in it now and the treble bleed stuff, but those are coming out regardless.

LOL unfortunately I don't have a lot of experience with caps :(
I like my guitars on the bright side so I never had to look for anything to darken them up.
that does make me think about one thing, you could try adjusting the pick up heights or tilting the pick ups a bit.

    A. Adjust the polepieces and the total height of the pickups.
    B. Roll off the tone pots a touch.

If that doesn't work, it might be time for a pickup swap. Have you heard the Rio Grande humbuckers? I didn't care for them, but they might be perfect for you: they use a thicker gauge of wire with fewer wraps than traditional PAF clones for softer highs and more mids.
