Cornell Dupree is on so many R&B recordings it's ridiculous (including a bunch of King Curtis material, like Soul Serenade). I love this version of Jr. Walker's (nostalgic and sweet) Way Back Home with Steve Gadd, following Dupree's simple but killer groove. He died a year ago though, no?

Dupree did alot with intervals. Gotta put up his Soul Serenade with King Curtis -- he just makes the song. What he's doing over the I/IV isn't that complicated, but it took me some work to get it.

Hey Bro, Thanks for doing some FB posting for me!
BTW, the JLV clip on your wall, I like seeing him with no capo and pick…:bong

So I fulfilled a lifelong ambition yesterday and signed up for the Guitar Center King of the Blues contest. I know TwoFeets has mentioned doing this in the past. I suck donkey balls on guitar but I figured my T-Bone/archtop thang will definitely turn some Stevie Ray Hendrix wannabees heads.

The sign up sheet had a spot for your "nickname or stage name" I assume for all the "Snakes" "Reverends" and "Texas Lightnin' Boys" that typically enter.

The form also had an "influences" section. I wrote T-Bone Walker, Pee Wee Crayton and Tiny Grimes. I thought of adding Pete Guitar Lewis, but it just seemed gratuitous.

Here's the track I'll be using

^ Interesting that they changed the name of the contest from 'King' to 'Battle'. Perhaps they read TGP? ;)

Yeah I noticed that too. I wonder if BB King has the phrase "King of the Blues" trademarked?

As a heart attack. It'll be fun and I'll do just about anything to play guitar somewhere.

Nice! Yeah I did it once a few years ago, the first year they had it. Some heavy metal guy won our store, meedley-meeeee. A couple of years ago, a pedal steel player won. I thought it was a guitar competition? At any rate Ryan, just witnessing the debacle will be worth the laughs. Good luck with the cheesy-ass backing tracks.

Ryan, I think you already won with that move!
I actually JUDGED that competion one year at Guitar Center Hollywood.
    Don't ask...
And PETE and a few others, yes it was about a year ago that Cornell passed.
Nonetheless, if you're gonna mention HIS name, here's the one I suggest above ALL others. I play this tune, with reverance, as an instrumental on almost every gig I can.

I think it is about time for a new version of this thread since we are at page 99. Any nominations for the person who should start the new thread?

I am thinking the honor should go to a long time poster. Fretshop comes to mind.

    Nominations now open

Whoever starts the new thread, I think it will be a fitting swan song for this thread, on the 14th anniversary of Lester Butler's death.

I say go for it as well.

I didn't know they had that many backing tracks for contestants. I always figured that they just had 4 or 5(four slow blues and a box shuffle :rimshot). The track you picked doesn't sound too cheesy, maybe the drums just a tad, that's about it.
